Title: Director, Engineering
Position Purpose
This position can expect to play a leadership role in the overall strategic investments for the converting business. The key areas will focus on identifying technology, applications, and delivering solutions in the following 3 areas…….Process Automation (eliminating manual and non value added tasks), Digital Printing on Paperboard, and Industry 4.0 (Smart Factory) capability in our factories.
This includes both short terms plans (0-3 years) and longer terms projects that positively impact the competitiveness of the converting operations. Some of the activities includes the creation, development, planning, and completion of initiatives on time and on budget. This will be a highly visible role with frequent interactions with key company senior leadership.
Principle Functional Responsibilities:
- Responsible for developing and implementing technology to automate various aspects of our folding cartons converting operations to include production and warehouse tasks. The objective is to automate manual or non value added tasks.
- Responsible for developing and implementing technology for Digital printing on folding cartons. This includes developing a use or business case.
- Responsible for identifying, developing, and implementing technology to deliver Industry 4.0 (Smart Factory) capability in our network of plants. These solutions will deliver higher levels of productivity.
- Sharing key plan and activities with Senior Management.
- Maintaining good relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Implementing best practice engineering methods.
- Providing technical guidance to engineering teams and top management.
- Supporting established organizational objectives by developing goals and strategies.
- Presenting capital budgets and plans.
Key Competencies:
- Results driven with demonstrated ability working in a high-performance, high-volume manufacturing environment.
- Strategic, analytical and innovative
- Automation experience in the folding carton industry preferred
- Digital Printing experience preferred
- Industry 4.0 knowledge is ideal.
- Able to break down and translate complicated sets of data, lead an entire team of engineers, and thrive on creating new processes while simultaneously adhering to tried and true methods
- Proven experience in process improvement and project management.
- Must have good attention to details, but be able to manage the big picture and have a “make-the-numbers” mentality.
- Must be able to manage multiple, complex tasks and deal easily with pressure on a day-in and day-out basis.
- Must be able to motivate, communicate and drive continuous improvement.
- Critical thinker, with excellent analytical abilities.
- Good listening, as well as, written and oral communication skills.
- Solid planning, leadership, and administrative skills.
- High energy, demonstrates urgency, purpose, and fast pace.
- Independent, self-starter with desire for continuous learning and employee development.
- Ability to navigate complex organization structures to successfully complete assignments.
- Must be available to travel up 50%.
Desired Background:
- 10 -15 years of related experience, including 5 years of manufacturing experience with close support of production and plant processes.
- Automation experience preferred
- Digital Printing experience preferred
- Industry 4.0 knowledge is ideal.
- Printing industry experience a plus.
- Project management and leadership skills.
- Technical training at various levels of the organization.
- Excellent team skills - as team member and trainer and developer.
- Demonstrated mechanical ability.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred
- Engineering bachelor’s degree with strong manufacturing curriculum also considered
Essential Job Functions include the following:
- Must be able to travel long distances by car and plane.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to hear and verbally respond. The employee frequently is required to sit and use hands to finger, handle and feel. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision. Employee is required to wear steel toe shoes, safety glasses and hearing protecting when walking in the manufacturing area. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to airborne particles and extreme heat. The noise level in the immediate work environment is normally quiet, however requires exposure to a noisy manufacturing environment.
