The Graphic Packaging law department is a fully engaged partner to the Company’s global business teams and provides counsel across broad subject matters, including intellectual property, securities law, compliance, environmental regulations, data privacy, marketing, labor and employment, and competition law.  The department’s transactional practice includes mergers and acquisitions, commercial financing, supply chain agreements, sales and purchase agreements, licensing, and real estate agreements.   The US legal team is comprised of seven attorneys and five paraprofessionals.  The Company also has three attorneys and a paraprofessional in the EU.

The Counsel, Employment will report to Graphic Packaging’s Assistant General Counsel and Chief Labor and Employment Counsel and will be responsible for providing legal support to clients across Graphic Packaging’s U.S. operations, with a focus on advising and counseling on employment and related compliance matters, drafting and reviewing employment-related agreements , drafting position statements and other submissions to state/federal administrative agencies, responding to demand letters, supporting internal investigations, and managing outside counsel in defending against claims. 

JOB FUNCTIONS: Job functions include but are not limited to the following.

  • Must work within and adhere to the company’s core values of Integrity, Respect, Accountability, Relationships and Teamwork
  • The position requires the performance of a broad range of responsibilities, including but not limited to:
  • Oversee and manage litigation, with a strong focus on litigation related to employment and labor practices
  • Investigate and respond to demand letters and administrative claims, including EEOC and DOL claims. Communicate directly with opposing counsel and, where appropriate, negotiate resolutions and draft settlement agreements
  • Demonstrate ability to analyze and interpret state and federal regulations and contract requirements and disseminate information in a comprehensible form to business leaders and clients
  • Provide timely advice on a broad range of matters, including leave of absences/accommodations, termination and discipline, hiring/background screening, employee defection, and immigration
  • Review and draft employment-related agreements, including recruiting agreements, separation agreements and restrictive covenants
  • Assist and support employee and compliance investigations performed by Human Resources and conduct such investigation as needed
  • Work independently, organize, and accurately prioritize work, be detail-oriented, understand when urgency is required and use good judgment in varied situations
  • Take direction and accept supervision with a willingness to be flexible with time and adjust to a changing work environment
  • Other duties as assigned



  • 4-7 years of legal experience in a law firm or in house with an emphasis on general corporate and commercial matters



  • Juris Doctor from accredited law school with strong academic credentials
  • Licensed to practice law and in good standing in the State of Georgia



  • In-depth knowledge of federal and state employment laws and regulations, including Americans with Disabilities Act, Family Medical Leave Act, EEO laws, wage and hour, and other federal, state, and local laws affecting the employer-employee relationship.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to balance legal and business risks.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to clearly convey practical legal advice to internal business stakeholders.
  • Strong drafting skills.
  • Positive attitude.
