MISSION / SUMMARY:

The Engineering Manager (Paper) role was created to provide technical solutions to the GPI Mill operations.  The key customers are the owners and operators of GPI’s paper machines.  The key deliverables are Best Practices, Paper technical support, problem solving, risk management and technical support for new projects. This role applies knowledge, skills and abilities to the design, cost estimate development, and implementation of capital and local improvement projects; planning and conceptualization of strategic improvements.  They perform various skilled tasks associated with design, engineering, maintenance, installation, startup, testing and troubleshooting of paper machine systems and associated equipment. They understand and align business operations and Engineering as he/she executes their role to exceed customer expectations and align with GPI business, cultural, financial and operational objectives.  The key deliverables are a strong emphasis on wet-end chemistry, sizers, and coaters.

JOB FUNCTIONS: Job functions include, but are not limited to the following.

This position will be responsible for safe operations of all of GPI’s paper machines, technical support to the paper machine managers.  The overall priority for this position is cost reduction for each of the mills and fostering best practices.

  • Risk management to protect people and equipment

  • Technical support for Paper Machines-specifically wet-end chemistry, sizers, and coaters

BACKGROUND / EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience at or above the level of a Finished Products manager
  • Developed training that includes benchmarking, operational best practices, maintenance and basic care best practice recommendations.
  • Developed and implemented long term sustainability initiatives to deliver benefits year over year.
  • Managed the day to day operations of a Finished Products department
  • Worked with maintenance department to resolve operational issues within the Paper and Finishing areas
  • Managed all chemical and clothing trials within the Finished Products area.
  • Planned annual maintenance outages and upgrades in the Finished Products area.
  • Project work included: installation, rebuild, etc. List relevant project work

 

EDUCATION / KNOWLEDGE:

  • Four-year degree Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering preferred or; 15 years of compensatory closely related work experience required in lieu of degree.
  • Minimum of 10 years of Paper machine operations management experience

  • Demonstrated strong leadership skills

  • Expert in paper machine design and operation
  • Success is defined as bringing value to bottom line by bringing forward and implementing solutions
  • Skilled in using technical tools to problem solve
  • Proven ability to get results

 

SCHEDULE DEMANDS:

  • General schedule is an 8-hour M-F assignment, however, employee must be willing to work alternate schedules occasionally; that may include early mornings, nights, and/or weekends and be punctual while doing so.
  • Must be able to travel up to 100% with overnight travel to include flying, driving, riding or by rail.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time up to 8-hours.
  • Occasional Lifting up to 20 lbs.
  • Reading computer screen or other electronic devices.
  • Use of various office hand and electrical tools or equipment.
