Title:  Rail and Intermodal Sourcing Manager

Lead the sourcing function for rail and intermodal transportation across GPI’s US footprint, and lead/manage operational initiatives with mills and converting plants to accomplish rail and intermodal objectives.  Engage business leaders within railroads and intermodal firms to negotiate competitive freight rates and secure capacity.  Hold railroads and intermodal to their commitments and manage/influence performance.  Work with cross-functional teams to determine the correct mode of transport for each independent ship lane.


JOB FUNCTIONS: Job functions include but are not limited to the following.


  • Lead GPI’s truck-to-rail initiative across the US footprint. $10MM to $15MM/yr annual EBIT impact.
  • Negotiate all railroad and intermodal transportation contracts with service providers.
  • Lead annual intermodal RFP’s.
  • Develop truck-to-intermodal conversion roadmap to highlight cost reduction opportunities; actively engage facilities and customer service teams to change from truck to intermodal to capture savings.
  • Work directly with GPI facilities to ensure an adequate supply of railroad-provided equipment.
  • Scorecard operational performance and hold regular calls with internal stakeholders to align, motivate, and recognize success.
  • Constructively confront poor rail/intermodal utilization at GPI facilities and coach for improvement.
  • Teach personnel in GPI facilities how to utilize railcar tracking and reporting services. Develop annual and strategic plans to optimize rail/intermodal utilization and SPI savings. Align plan components with cross-functional stakeholders to drive execution.
  • Develop processes and deploy methods to reduce railcar demurrage cost.
  • Develop railroad route guides defining exact carrier routing, freight rate, and supporting rail contract authority denotations.
  • Work with local switching crews to insure switches are accomplished timely; engage quickly with a high sense of urgency to resolve gaps and conflicts.
  • Actively collaborate with supply chain sourcing team to insure the most cost-effective means of rail transportation are secured for inbound rail deliveries (supplier- vs. GPI-sourced freight).
  • Evaluate potential requirements for network lease or dedicated railcar pool assignments.
  • Foster direct relationships with railroad sales, operations and car equipment representatives.
  • Develop and distribute monthly railroad and intermodal valued-added scorecard reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • 5 years of supply chain operations experience in a complex logistics organization.
  • 5 to 7 years intermodal/rail operations and/or management.



  • Bachelor’s degree in logistics or business-related field
  • Advanced computer skills including a significant understanding of SAP.
  • Moderate to Advanced experience with Excel, Access, and other analytical software tools.
  • Working knowledge of rail tracing software and applications.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage conflicts – under short timelines – to acceptable outcomes.
