The Safety Specialist is responsible for supporting day-to-day and long term safety and health activities for all mill operations, as well as ensuring the mill is aligned with corporate initiatives and priorities. Furthermore, the Safety Specialist interfaces directly with department leaders and Safety Advocates, who are hourly safety leaders, to ensure everyone understands company and regulatory compliance mandates. 

 The Safety Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing and maintaining effective systems, procedures and training to achieve and sustain an accident-free work environment.

 The Health & Safety Manager integrates continuous improvement in the health and safety systems and drives employee engagement to achieve desired results.  The Safety Specialist reports to the Health & Safety Supervisor.

 EXPERIENCE / BACKGROUND

  •  Minimum of 3-5 years of related experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated track record of success in working in a team environment with focus on results, safety and ability to solve problems.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations, Including OSHA recordkeeping.
  • Organized and detailed oriented.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with visits from state and federal agencies (OSHA, DOT, Fire Marshal etc.).
  • Ensure safe work practices comply with local, state and company standards are fully in place and enthusiastically supported.
  • Assist with maintaining the safety initiative process and tracking systems, including Riskonnect, hazard identification and remediation, fire system inspection process.
  • Manage the Contractor Safety Program.
  • Manage the ISN Contractor Safety process.
  • Actively promote a culture of engagement and respect.
  • Collaborate with Lead Team members, area leaders, and Safety Advocates to improve the work place through development of improved procedures and following up on incidents.
  • Regularly spend time in the manufacturing areas.
  • Maintain positive and open relationship with hourly team members to understand concerns and work together on solutions.
  • Demonstrate positive leadership for direct reports.
  • Provide leadership and support to the mill’s safety and environmental leadership and area improvement teams.
  • Provide leadership in developing, implementing, and managing safety policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Contractor Coordinator for annual outages.
  • Lead efforts for Heat Stress Prevention (communication and training).
  • Develop and implement safety training materials.
  • Manage the Mill’s Safety Sharepoint site in conformance with the mill’s work systems.
  • Assist Departments with incident investigations.
  • Manage Safety Communication system (Daily Safety Topics, One Point Lessons, etc.)
  • Maintain the Health & Safety Workbook in order to track activities for the Safety Department.
  • Maintain Safety Department Reports and communicate to appropriate personnel.
  • Review, revise and develop Health and Safety Policies and Procedures.
  • Assist with the implementation of the Safety Leadership certification process.
  • Implement and maintain Tappisafe Contractor Safety Training.
