Engineering Manager (Mechanical)

 

MISSION / SUMMARY:

The Engineering Manager - Mechanical will be responsible for managing the Mill wide Mechanical maintenance and reliability teams for the Augusta Mill. This group includes; Mill-wide salaried mechanical superintendents,  supervisors, planners, reliability engineers and all mechanical hourly team members.   This is a leadership role where the individual is responsible for providing direction, guidance and support for all mechanical direct and indirect reports.  The individual will be primarily responsible for the safety, efficiency, productivity, engagement and overall effectiveness of the mill wide mechanical teams. 

 

Specific responsibilities include the continuous improvement of reliability systems including: MOPS, planning, work execution, managing  through  managers, providing input into and driving all strategic decisions that affect all mechanical functional areas of maintenance and  giving continuous input and direction to  the mill wide budget development. The role also includes developing  and execution of the Mill wide five-year reliability improvement and equipment maintenance strategy, development and successful execution of all outages and the annual mill outage, developing and successfully implementing our annual repair budgets.


JOB FUNCTIONS: Job functions include but are not limited to the following.

  • Partners with area mechanical superintendents (Woodyard/Pulp Mill, Finished Products and Power and Recovery) to lead all maintenance initiatives.
  • Leads the mechanical maintenance organization to include; instituting measurable processes and controls designed to mitigate risk and enhance production within the mill to have 100% availability of our operational lines.
  • Provides solutions to mechanical technical problems and recommends improvements in mechanical maintenance organization as well as ensures strategic plans are formed and implemented.
  • Responsible for daily and annual outage mechanical maintenance in all areas.
  • Responsible for mill-wide mechanical team safety performance and capability.
  • Provides Daily effective communication with hourly and salaried maintenance mechanical personnel.
  • Monitor various KPIs to measure the effectiveness and identify improvement opportunities in the mechanical maintenance department and redirects efforts to achieve mill goals
  • Creates and manage all assigned operating budgets within mechanical maintenance department.
  • Participates in Maintenance weekend duty rotation.
  • Partners with the Mill-wide E&I manager to foster cross team coordination and execution.
  • Ensures all employees compliance with mill wide specifications and standards.
  • Directly involved in mill-wide capital projects to ensure they are designed for a reliable life expectancy.
  • Partners with area operating managers to develop a high-performance team.

Participates in the daily Lead Team Operational meetings to advise LT and redirect mechanical team if needed.

BACKGROUND / EXPERIENCE:

  • Five plus years’ progressive and practical paper mill operation experience preferred.
  • Five plus years of previous supervisory experience in a manufacturing environment required.
  • Ten years of experience in key maintenance/engineering roles in a heavy manufacturing environment

 

EDUCATION / KNOWLEDGE:

  • BS Degree in Engineering or equivalent technical experience (Mechanical Engineer Preferred)
  • Five plus years of relevant maintenance or operations management experience required
  • Experienced with Managing salaried and hourly in an industrial environment (Preferably in both maintenance and production)
  • Thorough knowledge of reliability concepts and application
  • Thorough knowledge of mechanical maintenance
  • Demonstrated leadership

  • Demonstrated ability to engage a work force
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Proactive problem solver

 

SCHEDULE DEMANDS:

  • General schedule is an 8-10 hour M-F assignment, however, employee must be willing to work alternate schedules occasionally; that may include early mornings, nights, and/or weekends and be punctual while doing so. Occasional overnight travel to include flying, driving, riding or by rail may also be required.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Sitting or standing for extended periods up to 8-hours.
  • Walking to and from operating areas.
  • Able to climb ladders
  • Wear PPE when required:  Hard Hat, safety glasses, hearing protection etc.
  • Occasional Lifting up to 20 lbs.
  • Reading computer screen or other electronic devices.
  • Use of various office hand and electrical tools or equipment.
