The Mission of the Innovation and Design department is to develop new packaging solutions through creative structural design that are desirable, feasible, and viable. This is achieved by working collaboratively with Sales, Marketing, Business Development and Research & Development to ensure success through each phase of concept advancement. 

As a Creative Structural Design Intern, you will get to work with some of the largest consumer product, food service, and beverage companies in the world; inspiring and bringing to life new and innovative solutions to help launch new products and solve challenging problems. Your skills and talents will be honed through hands-on experience and supported and nurtured by a team of veteran structural designers, graphic artists, and lab analysts. At Graphic Packaging, we truly value innovation and pride ourselves in creating packaging solutions that change the world. The Innovation & Design Department is part of the Global Innovation & New Business Organization that reports directly to the CEO.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Structural Design:

  • As an intern with our team, you will gain real world experience by attending design meetings, working in CAD software, testing designs, cutting & assembly of white samples & mock-ups and some presentation building.
  • Sample cutting and assembly will be a priority for the intern.
  • Best in class prototype samples for customer review and/or approval are highly prioritized at GPI.
  • Candidate will gain an understanding of the various design standards of our organization, GPI production plants, customers, and the packaging industry.
  • Packaging terminology will be taught thru exposure to various projects.
  • Manufacturability of structural designs will be assessed for intern training purposes.
    (Exposure to production plants is available based on location)
  • The ability to take quality photographs of samples for presentations is a plus.
  • Other duties as assigned 
  • Software Use:

    • Familiarity and/or training in Artios CAD systems including Artios 3D (training provided)
    • Ability to run a CAD table and its software interface for sample making (training provided)
    • Effective and professional communication skills utilizing digital interfacing platforms (training provided)
    • CAPE, TOPS, or similar pallet building program experience is a plus 

    Teamwork:

    • The foundation of the creative design team is rooted in teamwork, with members proactively communicating and coordinating on projects that require assistance.
    • Team members will assist each other in projects requiring tight deadlines.
    • Creating, maintaining, and nurturing relationships with design managers, team members, customers, sales, customer service, manufacturing design, and carton converting groups is required. 

    OTHER:

    Education / Knowledge / Skills:

    • Currently enrolled in Industrial Design, Packaging Engineering / Science, or similar disciplinary program preferred 

    Schedule Demands:

    General schedule is an 8-hour day, Monday thru Friday assignment

    Minimum term of 1 semester targeting Summer 2022 thru Fall 2022

    Additional rotations possible 

    Physical Demands:

    • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time up to 8-hours
    • Occasional lifting up to 20 lbs.
    • Reading computer screen or other electronic devices
    • Use of various office hand and electrical tools or equipment 

    Compensation / Expenses

    • Hourly rate paid position
