PRINTING DEPARTMENT LEAD SUMMARY:

To lead the press crews in the everyday operation of the presses, to ensure that make-readies and production runs are conducted in the most efficient manner possible to achieve top quality production. To understand and align business operations to the department functions as he/she executes their role to exceed customer expectations and align with GPI business, cultural, financial, and operational objectives.

 Primary Responsibilities are, but not limited to the following:

  • Serve as the link between department personnel, Maintenance, Printing Manager, and upper management.
  • Flexible to different shifts to work team position on press to assist in vacation coverages and staffing shortages.
  • Collaborate with department personnel to determine daily, short term, and long-term action plans to maintain and improve press conditions.
  • Assist press teams and maintenance in diagnosing press issues and determining root cause through structured problem-solving tactics such as 5-Why and documented Root Cause Problem Solving.
  • Verify press issues are documented in Megamations with all necessary details and pertinent information.
  • Combine analysis of production reports, downtime reports, historical and open work orders with real time information from press team members to identify underlying issues, commonalities, and links between issues then develop solutions and preventative actions
  • Partner with press team to verify and validate completion of Maintenance work orders.
  • Partner with Maintenance, Maintenance Scheduler, Reliability Manager, Printing Manager, EHS Manager, and Production Scheduler to plan press outages and other large-scale projects.
  • Coordinate with Printing Manager to assist in directing and supervising the day-to-day shift activities.
  • Coordinate with Printing Manager to establish daily production priorities.
  • Collaborate with department colleagues to plan production operation sequences for manufacturing schedule, utilizing knowledge of production processes and methods, machine and equipment capabilities, material availability, and human resource requirements and capabilities.
  • Review production schedule and partner with team members to prevent operational delays and downtime.
  • Responsible for equipment condition and department housekeeping.
  • Work with employees to maintain a safe work environment. Leads and supports employees to work in a safe manner and to seek improvements in work practices.
  • Ensure that product quality and production efficiencies meet or exceed established standards.
  • Examine procedures and engage press teams to recommend changes to save time, labor, and other costs and to improve quality control and operating efficiency.
  • Audits department daily for safety, quality, procedural, housekeeping, and 5S compliance.
  • Verify completeness and accuracy of employee’s work, computations, and records.
  • Participates in work to facilitate productivity or overcome difficult aspects of work.
  • Instructs team in job duties or arranges for training to be provided where applicable.
  • Facilitates team meetings, intervenes as necessary to keep the team’s goals and results consistent with company direction, and works with the team members to develop their full potential.
  • Provide input on job performance and recommends appropriate personnel action.
  • Work with press teams to identify customer specific opportunities for improvement.
  • Assist in maintaining GPI, GMP, and SQF department standards.
  • Perform Quality audits on machines throughout the day.
  • Assist employees with quality issues throughout the day.
  • Shift meeting with Pressroom Manager to brief on the events of the day, focus for night shift and next 24 to 48 hours.
  • Prepare the department for shift change (clean and orderly)
  • Complete Assigned Projects if applicable
  • Share in coverage responsibilities with management team for Pressroom Manager vacations.
  • Review audits results and EOS Reports from previous shifts.
  • Assist with New Business Meetings.
  • Maintain and monitor control documents.
  • Participate and lead Kaizen events and sustain resulting improvements.
  • Participate in leadership training and skill development.
  • Provide employees with guidance in handling difficult or complex problems and in resolving grievances or submits unsettled disputes to management.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.                   

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to utilize and lead formal problem-solving processes. Ability to develop primary and alternative courses of action with subject matter experts input.

LEADERSHIP ABILITY:

Ability to motivate people to perform at high levels and contribute to growth of positive continuous improvement culture.

COMPUTER SKILLS:

MS Office, and database programs

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • 1-2 years manufacturing experience preferred.
  • 3-5 years printing experience.

Desired:

  • Experience with Manroland 700 offset printing presses.
  • Supervisor or other leadership experience.
  • Mechanical and electrical aptitude.
  • tBox software system.

WORK SCHEDULE:

Employees are required to work 8-hour (M-F) schedule including weekends.

Occasional overtime is required.

Must be able to perform computer entry and testing functions as well as manual testing of cartons and paperboard.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to vibration.
