Graphic Packaging International is a foodservice cup forming manufacturing operation seeking candidates to join our Clarksville, Tennessee team.  This job posting is for a Production Supervisor – Plastic Extrusion/Thermoforming. 



The Thermoforming/Plastic Extrusion Production Supervisor role is responsible for safety, employee engagement, productivity, quality, and customer service on an assigned shift. This role directs and coordinates day-to-day shift activities by providing leadership and supervision in the Thermoforming and Plastic Print Departments (but may be assigned other duties). The Production Supervisor understands and aligns business operations as they execute the role to exceed customer expectations and align with GPI business, cultural, financial, and operational objectives. The Production Supervisor shares an obligation to protect and strengthen Graphic Packaging International’s good reputation in its relationships with customers, employees, suppliers, competitors, investors, and governmental agencies.  Furthermore, the Production Supervisor acts consistently with GPI’s core values: Integrity, Respect, Accountability, Relationships, and Teamwork.


JOB FUNCTIONS: Job functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Work directly with and supervise a production team of approximately 30 employees
  • Direct and support activities and personnel compliance in developing a safe work environment and a fostering a culture of safe performance
  • Achieve productivity by establishing and communicating clear goals, providing requisite resources to the team, engaging the team, and setting appropriate priorities and monitoring progress
  • Achieve safety goals by following defined safety procedures, encouraging team involvement, addressing safety concerns, and modeling proper safe behaviors
  • Achieve desired level of engagement by providing leadership on the shift.  Engagement includes listening and responding to employee issues, taking decisive actions, recognizing excellent performance, and holding employees accountable for performance and personal actions.
  • Achieve quality and waste goals by ensuring all direct reports are properly trained on equipment, following proper procedures, performing requisite inspections, and acting upon suggested improvements.
  • Effectively communicates with all levels of the organization on key issues (e.g., performance reviews, 1-on-1 meetings, safety meetings, monthly business results, etc.)
  • Facilitate team meetings; intervene as necessary to keep the team’s goals and results consistent with company direction, and work with team members to develop their full potential.
  • Initiate and conduct personnel actions such as discipline, performance evaluations, and timekeeping.
  • Evaluate subordinate job performance and recommend appropriate personnel action.
  • Administer, communicate, and interpret work procedures and company policies.
  • Guide and support team members to navigate through difficult or complex problems and resolving issues.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned.

Required Skills


  • Bachelor’s degree (Industrial Engineering, Production Management, Business Administration, or related field) strongly preferred; extensive work experience in a Thermoforming/Plastic Extrusion Production Supervisory role, required in lieu of degree.



  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working in a manufacturing leadership role
  • Minimum of 3 years manufacturing supervisor experience, strongly preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years technical and mechanical operation of plastic extrusion machines, strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team, including training, coaching, mentoring, positive counseling, and discipline of team members
  • Strong strategic, analytical problem-solving ability (TCC/Trouble Cause Correction)
  • Demonstrated decision making skills, being both timely and effective
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, including motivation of team members and conflict resolution
  • Demonstrated knowledge of process improvement methodologies (Lean, Six Sigma, 5S or other discipline)
  • Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills, at all levels (superior and subordinate)
  • Proficient computer skills with a focus on Microsoft Office applications and QAD experience
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as within a team
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate activities with a variety of departments
  • Strong safety orientation
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without accommodation


  • A typical Thermoforming/Plastics Extrusion Production Supervisor schedule consists of an 8-hour shift. However, the Production Supervisor must be willing to work alternate schedules, as needed.  Alternate schedules may include early mornings, late nights, and/or working an opposite weekend.  These alternate schedules may also include hours extending from their normal schedule, covering other departments




  • Sitting, walking, or standing for extended periods of time, up to 12-hours
  • Occasional Lifting up to 25 lbs.
  • Reading computer screens or other electronic devices
  • Use of various office equipment, cell phones, hand and electrical tools or other power equipment.
  • Use of Personal Protective Equipment in designated areas (Safety Shoes, Hearing Protection, Hair & Beard Netting).
  • Working in various temperatures and humidity levels, depending on building and department (not all work areas are temperature controlled).
  • Ability to work overtime (greater than 40 hours per week) and the ability to work any shift, including 12 hours, evenings, and weekends



  • Productivity goals are met by establishing clear goals, providing requisite resources to direct reports, ensuring proper equipment care/maintenance, and engaging the workforce.
  • Engagement is achieved by providing leadership on the shift.  This includes listening and responding to employee issues, taking decisive actions, recognizing excellent performance, and holding employees accountable for undesirable behaviors.
  • Designing and managing work: customer focus, measurement of efficiencies, organization, planning, development, setting of priorities, process management, assessment of functional and technical skills.
  • Utilization of teams: development of effective teams, action orientation, conflict management, confrontation of direct reports, delegation of responsibilities, team direction, team motivation, listening, results driven, team evaluation
  • Being a strong role model and leader:  demonstration of integrity, ethics, and values. 
  • This position should ultimately serve as a developmental role for future Superintendents.



30 days of on-the-job training with an experienced Production Supervisor and/or Department Manager
