Title:  Engineering/Maintenance Manager

The Plant Engineering Manager is responsible for leading all phases of assigned capital projects, including initial project concept and metrics, project approval, planning and coordination of vendor responsibilities, interface with operations and department management, financial control, and reporting.  Additional responsibilities include leading continuous, formal communication between operations and department management, and plant reliability leadership on chronic and single event issues that have led to avoidable downtime and material/labor cost.  He/she is responsible for the safety, employee engagement, productivity, quality, and customer service associated with a multi-shift Maintenance operation. He/she is responsible for managing the daily operation of this department, ensuring efficiencies and overall productivity meets or exceeds established standards. 

JOB FUNCTIONS: Job functions include, but are not limited to the following.

  • Lead multiple workflow improvement, equipment modernization, and building and infrastructure projects through all phases (i.e. conceptual, design, proof-of-concept, implementation, and acceptance).
  • Develop project plans, requests for proposal, engineering estimates, and vendor bids for capital and expense projects.
  • Review, approve, or modify project designs.
  • Oversee vendor selection to secure competent and cost competitive vendors.
  • Develop and maintain detailed project scope of work documents, project timelines, budgets and spending forecasts.
  • Provide input for multi-year capital and infrastructure plans.
  • Ensure achievement of safety goals through developing and supporting a culture of following defined safety procedures, encouraging involvement, following up on safety concerns, and modeling proper safe behaviors. Partner directly with HSE, as needed, to ensure adherence to safety and environmental standards.
  • Ensure desired level of employee engagement within the Maintenance department.  This includes developing and supporting a culture of listening and responding to employee issues, taking decisive actions, recognizing excellent performance, and holding employees accountable for undesirable behaviors.
  • Ensure achievement of quality goals, ensuring employees are properly trained on quality standards, and following proper quality procedures. Partner directly with QA, as needed to ensure adherence to customer quality standards.
  • Ensure achievement of productivity goals by establishing and communicating clear objectives, providing requisite resources to direct reports, engaging the workforce and setting appropriate priorities / monitoring progress.
  • Develop and support a culture focused on continuous improvement, waste reduction and optimal throughput, working closely with maintenance team, production, warehousing and distribution department management on projects and process improvement opportunities.
  • Develop, implement, improve and manage new and existing predictive, preventative and corrective maintenance programs.
  • Use maintenance disciplines in the development and application of reliability engineering, root-cause analysis and troubleshooting of equipment and processes.
  • Develop, implement and sustain reliability best practices to reduce unscheduled maintenance downtime and costs.
  • Report savings resulting from maintenance excellence initiatives. Develop maintenance benchmarking metrics.
  • Analyze downtime to identify chronic/sporadic failures and lead reliability improvement efforts.
  • Assist in development and execution of overall Maintenance department budget.
  • Effectively communicate both up and down the organization on key issues (e.g. performance reviews, 1-on-1’s, safety meetings, overtime plans, monthly business results, etc.)
  • Evaluate direct report job performance and recommends appropriate personnel action.
  • Work with contractors and suppliers to develop and execute capital projects.
  • Administer, communicate and interpret work procedures and company policies.
  • Provides direct reports with guidance in handling difficult or complex problems and in resolving issues or submits unsettled disputes to management.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills


  • Minimum of 10 years of work experience in Engineering and/or Maintenance management role within a manufacturing environment; cup making, thermoforming or paper converting experience, preferred.
  • Experience leading preventative/predicative/precision maintenance programs.
  • Experience in maintenance planning and scheduling.
  • Reliability Engineering experience, preferred.


  • Bachelor’s degree (Engineering, Technology, or related field strongly preferred); or, closely related work experience required in lieu of degree.



  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team, including train, coach, mentor, counsel, and discipline.
  • Strong strategic, analytical problem-solving ability (TCC/Trouble Cause Correction)
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills; ability to motivate people.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of process improvement methodologies (Lean, Six Sigma, 5S or other discipline)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Computer skills with a focus on Microsoft office applications.
  • Proficiency with computer-based maintenance management systems.
  • Ability to work independently as well as the ability to coordinate activities with different departments
  • Strong safety orientation as per job requirements



  • Sitting, walking or standing for extended periods of time up to 12-hours.
  • Occasional Lifting up to 20 lbs.
  • Reading computer screen or other electronic devices.
  • Use of various office equipment, hand and electrical tools or equipment.
  • Use of Personal Protective Equipment in designated areas (Safety Shoes, Hearing Protection, Hair & Beard Netting).
  • Working in various temperatures & humidity levels depending on building & department (not all areas are temperature controlled throughout facilities).
  • Ability to work overtime (greater than 40 hours per week)
  • Ability to work any shift, including 12 hours, evenings, and weekends.
