CNC Machine Operator 

We have a great opportunity for a motivated self-starter in our Machine Trial Order Facility (MTO). The Machine Trial Order (MTO) group, within Innovation and Design, is primarily responsible for the generation of production-quality folding paperboard carton samples that are used by our end-use customers for marketing, proof-of-design, and equipment set-up purposes.  Further, the MTO group is responsible for the generation of production phenolic and steel counter plates that directly support our nation-wide network of commercial converting operations.

The CNC Machine Operator position’s primary responsibility is to operate the counter production room which supports GPI’s platen plant operations. This requires scheduling, running up-to three milling machines, programming of phenolic and steel counter milling files, inspecting and cleaning the counters, shipping the counters to their final destinations. The person in this position should be familiarity with CAM driven machine operations such as CNC machining and have solid computer skills.


Primary Responsibilities are, but not limited to the following:

Schedule Management and Machine Operations:

  • Actively monitor, maintain, and control work schedule (including daily load balancing) and back-log using computer programs, machine knowledge, phone, and email systems
    • Work closely with manufacturing designers and production facilities to ensure on time delivery and quality of product
  • Operator of all CAM driven milling machines
    • Operate all milling machines as needed by the schedule to generate steel and phenolic counter plates
    • Clean, inspect, package, and ship out steel and phenolic counters
  • Maintain Inventory of raw materials and tools for counter room operations
  • Lead and direct one employee from the facility daily in counter production to meet the daily output requirements
  • Operate forklifts and clamp trucks as necessary
  • Perform Preventative maintenance and assist with other maintenance on machines and systems associated with the machines

Software / Computer

  • Use equipment and computer applications to ship product
  • Understand and efficiently use the corporate database and software for a variety of tasks including schedule, order records, equipment log, and accounting functions
  • Review CAD and CAM files for efficiency and quality
  • Use the GPI CAD systems for counter production and programming (steel and phenolic)
  • Know Milling machine front end software for efficient use of the machines

General Operations:

  • Complete all necessary housekeeping duties
  • Actively engage in maintaining a safe working environment


  • Work independently and as part of a team to complete the schedule and all daily required tasks in a timely manner
  • Work collaboratively with the Manufacturing Design team, MTO team, and Plants to increase efficiency (speed), quality, and output quantity of counter production
  • Effectively interface and interact with internal and external customers, stakeholders, peers, and co-workers to resolve issues (such as our plants, carton structure designers, and manufacturing designers) in a timely fashion

Training and Continuous Improvement

  • Actively participate and lead in employee Certification and Re-Certification activities
  • Drive the identification, development, and implementation of training and process documents for the counter room
  • Drive the identification, development, and implementation of Continuous Improvement initiatives
  • Monitor, manage, and complete projects of varying focus, scope, complexity, and duration

Required Skills

  • High-level of mechanical knowledge and aptitude for CNC machining, printing/coating, die cutting, production tooling design, finishing processes, and graphics layout
  • Working knowledge of paperboard substrates
  • Working knowledge of carton structural design
  • Working Knowledge of ArtiosCAD, MasterCAM, and SAP
  • Working Knowledge of Datron, Lasercomb, and Gerber milling machines
  • Prior mechanical or electrical maintenance experience in an industrial/commercial environment
  • Any level of LEAN / Six Sigma education and experience

Required Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Prior demonstrated experience (2 years) with hands-on production on a CNC machine
  • Solid Computer Skills and High Proficiency with computer systems: CAD/CAM software, Programming, MS-Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Machine Operation Experience
  • Very high level of focus and attention to Safety, Quality, and Productivity expectations and requirements

  • Working environment: typically, a manufacturing environment. Must be able to stand/move for most of the day 95% of the time. This position may be required to carry up to 35lbs and lift up-to 50 lbs. occasionally.
    • Must be able to stand on feet or move about equipment (95%)
