MISSION / SUMMARY:

 

The Manager, Safety & Health will provide world class expertise to fully support the Kalamazoo Mill’s safety objectives through demonstrated leadership. The Kalamazoo mill currently has three paper machines, a stock prep system, powerhouse and waste water treatment plant.  This position is a member of the Mill leadership team directly responsible for managing the safety systems ensuring the health and welfare of all employees, vendors, contractors, visitors, etc.  They understand and align business operations and Safety as he/she executes their role to exceed customer expectations and align with GPI business, cultural, financial and operational objectives.

JOB FUNCTIONS: Job functions include, but are not limited to the following.

 

  • Accountable for managing people, setting direction and deploying safety, health and security and fire protection resources in a union environment for the leading asset within GPI
  • Develops plans and delivers results in a fast-changing business and regulatory environment by participating in Mill Divisional safety initiatives that drive safety process improvements.
  • Provides input to Mill and departmental strategy
  • Coordinate, plan and drive the Mill Safety Committee reviews. Participate, provide guidance and support for area safety team meetings
  • Manages the safety and security direction for all persons on company premise
  • Contributes directly to Mill priorities and planning
  • Accountable for the budget, safety performance and results for the leading mill
  • Coordinates and supervises the daily activities of safety, health and security in support of the operations team
  • Directly supervises safety professional and interns for a location supporting approximately 450 employees and multiple contractors
  • Establishes methodologies for measuring the effectiveness of mill compliance with OSHA, state and other federal laws
  • Provides solutions to complex safety, health and security issues serving as the safety leader i.e. best practice/quality safety and health resource, technical expert, train/mentors managers, supervisors and staff
  • Conducts studies and investigations to ensure compliance with government safety and health laws, standards and regulations, and industrial hygiene.  Established a rapport with local fire, police, and sheriff departments
  • Investigates accidents and promotes safety-conscious work performance and training programs with defined safety performance measures including A3 and other data mining processes for hazard analysis and corrective actions on Mill incidents driving for root cause analysis 
  • Designs, develops, implements and oversees the organization's health, safety and security programs and procedures including First Responders, OSHA Audiometric and Respirator fit testing, etc.
  • Safeguards employees and surrounding community by ensuring all site facilities are in compliance with regulations (includes PSM.) Works closely with OSHA officials, state police, Hazmat, community representatives, and other officials as required
  • Manages and documents the safety audits of buildings, facilities, tools and equipment
  • Determines and develops safety training requirements and provides employees with safety training applicable to their work processes. Establishes training schedule and tracks compliance for such.
  • Develops recommendations and follow-up to prevent accident recurrence
  • Maintains comprehensive knowledge of government safety regulations
  • Manages Workers Compensation Case Management
  • Directs and coordinates appropriate, timely and cost-effective delivery of health care related to disability, urgent and emergency care, work limitations, transitional return to work plans, accommodations and part-time work for workers compensation and non-workers compensation illness and injury
  • Actively participates in machine outages to oversee the safety aspects of the process
  • Actively participate and oversee all required safety needs of the new paper machine as it is commissioned and becomes fully functional.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

BACKGROUND / EXPERIENCE:

 

  • 8-10 years of progressive Safety & Health leadership experience in heavy manufacturing, to include Process Safety Management, site security, and medical.
  • Possesses broad technical expertise, business and industry knowledge, and process and people leadership capabilities.
  • Paper manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Union environment experience preferred.

 

 

EDUCATION / KNOWLEDGE:

 

  • BS Degree required

 

SKILLS:

 

  • CSP certification is preferred.

 

SCHEDULE DEMANDS:

 

  • General schedule is an 8-hour M-F assignment, however, employee must be willing to work alternate schedules occasionally; that may include early mornings, nights, and/or weekends and be punctual while doing so.  Weekend and evening on call responsibilities based on rotation.
  • Occasional overnight travel to include flying, driving, riding or by rail.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

 

  • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time up to 8 hours.
  • Occasional Lifting up to 20 lbs.
  • Reading computer screen or other electronic devices.
  • Use of various office hand and electrical tools or equipment.
