MISSION / SUMMARY:

The Production Superintendent is responsible for the performance and culture of his/her shift - to include safety, quality, waste, building positive employee relations, development and engagement of team members, continuous improvement and exceeding budgeted production and operational metrics.  They report to the Operations Manager.  Shift Managers have dotted line reporting to the Production Superintendent in a matrix management structure. The Production Superintendent understands and aligns business operations and plant production as he/she executes their role to exceed customer expectations and align with GPI business, cultural, financial and operational objectives.

JOB FUNCTIONS: Job functions include, but are not limited to the following.

  • Conduct department audits to ensure that the proper safety processes and systems are consistently and strictly enforced
  • Be proficient with all of the Plant Wide and the Departmental Safety policies and procedures
  • Maintain zero environmental compliance issues by fully understanding and enforcing the requirements
  • Ensure that all required safety training is done effectively with all employees across all shift
  • Provide a safe work environment by strictly enforcing proper housekeeping requirements and 5S
  • Ensure effective and appropriate response to safety incidents, including contacting key personnel per documented policy
  • Focus on individual development and success to achieving the desired results of the overall team
  • Assist with coaching all Shift Managers as needed with guidance from Plant Manager, Department Managers, and HR Manager
  • Help drive the Shift Manager’s engagement on shift by leading by example
  • Appropriately prioritize “people” issues at all times
  • Provide input on the Performance process for growth of Shift Managers
  • Ensure that the proper training processes are in place and are being followed
  • Ensure all rules and procedures are being consistently followed and enforced and that all investigations are completed correctly and in a timely manner
  • Embrace and enforce the open door policy
  • Communicate to shift leadership team over all business information nightly
  • Encourage engagement of all employees during troubleshooting and decision making, empower/equip organization to make decisions at the lowest level
  • Maintain coordination/communication with all supervisors on shift. Manage department priorities and resources.  Ensure proper response and management of crewing and reliability issues on shift.
  • Understand all customer expectations
  • Hold employees accountable for meeting all quality and productivity objectives.
  • Embrace and help hold the Shift Managers accountable for the utilization of the Work Systems principles and tools
  • Evaluate and provide input on specific training needs for the department
  • Meet quarterly with Department Manager to review the shift performance and opportunities for improvements.
  • Understand and help control all cost drivers throughout the department
  • Participate in the Plant Cost Reduction efforts by actively soliciting, communicating and implementing cost reduction opportunities
  • Hold Shift Managers and employees on the shift accountable for the strict enforcement of following the Basic Care procedures
  • Facilitate and encourage deliberate and structured troubleshooting processes and root cause failure analysis. Involve operators as much as possible.
  • Ensure equipment repairs and maintenance schedules are effective by using SAP data, production data, and RCFA tools to evaluate work, results, and costs.
  • Ensure proper procedures are in place for safe, quality and efficient production
  • Support off shift production by responding appropriately and timely to their needs
  • Evaluate training needs by continually assessing needs of crew members in order to provide learning opportunities
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

BACKGROUND / EXPERIENCE:

  • 3-5 Years manufacturing experience preferred

 

EDUCATION / KNOWLEDGE:

  • Four-year degree preferred or;
  • Compensatory closely related work experience required in lieu of degree.

 

SKILLS:

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Project Management Skills
  • Software Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint)

 

SCHEDULE DEMANDS:

  • General schedule is a 12-hour shift on a 2/2/3 schedule; however, employee must be willing to work alternate schedules occasionally.
  • Occasional overnight travel to include flying, driving, riding or by rail.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time up to 8-hours.
  • Occasional Lifting up to 20 lbs.
  • Reading computer screen or other electronic devices.
  • Use of various office hand and electrical tools or equipment.
