Title:  Quality Engineer

This role will be responsible for providing Engineering Support, and technical and machine troubleshooting support for the Quality Department. They will have 1 – 2 employees total under his/her direct supervision.  They will also be responsible for working in conjunction with the Quality Control Manager to drive continuous improvement initiatives within the Department and across the Kenton Plant.  They will develop, test, modify, and create solutions to technical problems. The candidate must have basic knowledge in all facets of engineering, capital requests, procuring equipment and services, installation of new equipment, working with vendors and contractors, and converting process trouble shooting.  Under general direction, will provide input on engineering projects, from planning to implementation. They understand and align business operations and Engineering as he/she executes their role to exceed customer expectations and align with GPI business, cultural, financial and operational objectives.

JOB FUNCTIONS: Job functions include, but are not limited to the following.

 

Leadership:

  • Work with and manage 1 – 2 direct reports and provide leadership to the Quality team as needed
  • Evaluate direct reports’ job performance (including Performance Reviews and 1-on-1 meetings) and provide feedback to drive growth and development
  • Address personnel issues with Department Manager and HR involvement as needed
  • Utilize Work Brain to approve daily timesheets and accept/deny vacation requests
  • Conduct Safety investigation

 

Process/Technical Functions:

  • Comply with all Company and department safety policies, procedures and programs. Identify safety short falls and strives to eliminate them.
  • Provide technical support to the Quality Department to optimize performance, increase production efficiency, improve quality, and increase equipment reliability.
  • Create and use processes for analysis of production and maintenance data to identify problems with processes, equipment, tooling, and personnel.  Use technical skills and formal methods to identify root causes and implement solutions, including design changes.
  • Coordinate communications and efforts with internal and external resources to troubleshoot equipment and to execute repairs, PM’s, and upgrades to equipment and tooling.  Participate in planning meetings with Maintenance and the Cup Departments.
  • Support efforts of Continuous Improvement group to develop departmental procedures and training programs.  Develop specific technical procedures when necessary.  Participate in Continuous Improvement efforts and teams.
  • Support development and implementation of capital improvements, and lead implementation when needed.
  •  Provide expertise and training in the use of operating and troubleshooting processes with Maintenance and Operators, to solve day-to-day issues.
  • Track and evaluate numerous Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) and Operator performance data, identify trends, and recommend courses of action to address needs.
  • Support process problem solving by identifying sources of process upsets and other anomalies.
  • Use SAP and production databases to determine effective maintenance schedules and predictive parts replacement that will improve reliability.
  • Support the Quality Management System to adhere to corporate and GFSI standards.
  • Evaluate layout, flow, and balance of processes.  Coordinate process changes and equipment modifications.  Measure effectiveness of improvements. Manage multiple scopes of work in various phases simultaneously
  • Execute departmental projects to reduce costs, reduce spoilage, and improve performance.
  • Participate in planning and execution of trials to support accuracy of data and results / conclusions.

 

Continuous Improvement:

  • Coordinate and conduct trials, complete required paperwork and communicate results to stakeholders; additionally, create final trial reports for internal and external review.
  • Develop closed-loop quality system driven to reduce process variation and ensure plant compliance.
  • Act as change agent to drive continuous improvement of production and service processes to improve quality and increase efficiency, which includes root cause analysis and problem solving.
  • Develop and implement product quality plans and procedures by overseeing gauge requirements, frequency, responsibility and methods to ensure compliance to process and product specifications.

BACKGROUND / EXPERIENCE:

  • 4 year degree
  • Prior experience in converting/ packaging industry preferred.
  • Knowledge in Six-Sigma/Lean/Work Systems is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously while meeting tight deadlines
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with individuals within all levels of the organization
  • Proficiency in all Microsoft Office software; AutoCad, SolidWorks, and SAP a plus

 

SCHEDULE DEMANDS:

  • General schedule is an 8-hour M-F assignment, however, employee must be willing to work alternate schedules occasionally; that may include early mornings, nights, and/or weekends and be punctual while doing so.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time up to 8-hours.
  • Occasional Lifting up to 20 lbs.
  • Reading computer screen or other electronic devices.
  • Use of various office hand and electrical tools or equipment.
