Title:  Packaging Scientist

With limited, to direct supervision from the Laboratory Manager, the Packaging Materials Scientist performs advanced materials engineering (esp., and including coating research/development, formulations, advanced polymer research/analysis, and polymeric materials support/development) in support of Corporate R&D for new product development, and existing business/plant support. The PMS also performs physical/chemical analyses (as needed) related to the materials used in packaging manufacturing.

  • Leads and manages advanced material-related projects and programs in support of Global R&D, especially relating to coatings, coating chemistry, formulations, coating development, and research.
  • Leads and manages advanced projects and programs as they relate to polymers, polymer research/analysis, and polymeric material support/development, as it pertains to new materials, uses, including polymer sustainability.
  • Advanced formulary, materials analysis, and research in direct support of the projects assigned to the Laboratory Manager.
  • Conducts and/or leads the analytical analysis of films/polymers, adhesives, inks & coatings using techniques such as FTIR and DSC analytical techniques.
  • Develop and evaluate new procedures for the ‘chemical/physical’ analyses of folding carton substrates (primarily focusing on coatings, and polymeric materials).
  • Writes detailed reports and emails stating results and conclusions, and future course of action from the lab work, or research completed.

Required Skills

MS/PhD in Chemistry, or Materials Science (with an emphasis on polymers, plastics, coatings) required. 5-10 years’ experience in a ‘working’ lab environment achieved through school/university, and/or work experience/job functions. Coatings/polymers/materials experience acquired through work within the packaging, or chemical industries is a strong asset to this position and may receive additional consideration. Familiarization with FTIR and DSC analytical techniques, and other advanced materials analysis experience, and knowledge is also a definite benefit.  Additional skills and coursework, knowledge and/or experience in; food packaging, sustainability, regulatory, and product safety is also desired.
