Title:  R&D Maintenance Technician

With limited supervision the R&D Maintenance Technician (RDMT) is responsible for maintaining, designing, fabricating, converting, and installing machines and processes directly related to the launch of new business objectives, new manufacturing processes, and qualification of new raw materials. The RDMT also assists with the daily maintenance and function of the mechanical aspects of the Global R&D center.


1) Maintains, designs, fabricates, converts, maintains, operates, and trains others on the installation and use of package converting equipment in support of launching new business initiatives for the Company.


2) Responsible for maintenance and up-keep of R&D pilot line converting equipment.


3) Works independently and travels to GPI manufacturing locations to install and/or troubleshoot package manufacturing machinery.


4) Assists the R&D Manager, Facilities and Pilot Manufacturing with the daily operations of the Global R&D center.


5) Writes reports/recommendations on R&D mechanical initiatives and communicates regularly with machine venders, GPI plant management, GPI customers, and business development personnel.


6) Schedules, coordinates, and manages manufacturing trials evaluating new raw materials and converting processes.


7) Facilitates process-related projects and programs in support of Global R&D.

Required Skills

Qualified candidate will have at a minimum a High School diploma or equivalent (GED), with 20 years of experience operating, fabricating, and maintaining manufacturing equipment used in the packaging converting industry (printing presses, laminators, die-cutters/sheeters, folder/gluers, metallizers). Candidate must be comfortable working with and around customers.   It is preferable that the qualified candidate have machine shop/machining experience working with typical machine tools such as mills, lathes, welding equipment, etc.

Ability to lift up to 40-50 lbs. Ability to work safely and effectively on/around large manufacturing equipment. Communicates and works effectively and safely around sometimes dangerous chemicals and chemical environments. Ability to travel 4-6 times/year.

Required Experience

20 years of experience operating, fabricating, and maintaining manufacturing equipment used in the packaging converting industry (printing presses, laminators, die-cutters/sheeters, folder/gluers, metallizers) with an emphasis on printing technology (gravure, flexography, lithography).
