The Manager, Safety & Health will provide world class expertise to fully support the Macon Mill’s safety objectives through demonstrated leadership. This position is a member of the Mill senior leadership team directly responsible for managing the safety systems ensuring the health and welfare of all employees, vendors, contractors, visitors, etc.,


JOB FUNCTION: Job functions include but are not limited to the following.

  • Accountable for managing people, setting direction and deploying safety, health and security and fire protection resources in a union environment for the leading asset within GPI
  • Develops plans and delivers results in a fast changing business and regulatory environment by participating in Mill Divisional safety initiatives that drive safety process improvements.
  • Provides input to Mill and departmental strategy
  • Coordinate and drive the Mill Safety Committee reviews. Participate, provide guidance and support for area safety team meetings
  • Manages the safety and security direction for all persons on company premise
  • Contributes directly to Mill priorities and planning
  • Accountable for the budget, safety performance and results for the leading mill in GPII accounting for approximately 25% of total company revenue
  • Coordinates and supervises the daily activities of safety, health and security in support of the operations team
  • Directly supervises 1 professional and 18 site security for a location supporting approximately 550 employees and potentially 100 contractors per day and 1000 during peak events
  • Establishes methodologies for measuring the effectiveness of mill compliance with OSHA, state and other federal laws
  • Provides solutions to complex safety, health and security issues serving as the senior safety leader i.e. best practice/quality safety and health resource, technical expert, train/mentors managers, supervisors and staff
  • Conducts studies and investigations to ensure compliance with government safety and health laws, standards and regulations, and industrial hygiene.  Established a rapport with local fire, police, and sheriff departments
  • Investigates accidents and promotes safety-conscious work performance and training programs with defined safety performance measures including A3 and other data mining processes for hazard analysis and corrective actions on Mill incidents driving for root cause analysis 
  • Designs, develops, implements and oversees the organization's health, safety and security programs and procedures including First Responders, OSHA Audiometric and Respirator fit testing, etc.
  • Safeguards employees and surrounding community by ensuring all site facilities are in compliance with regulations (includes PSM.) Works closely with OSHA officials, state police, Hazmat, community representatives, and other officials as required
  • Manages and documents the safety audits of buildings, facilities, tools and equipment
  • Determines and develops safety training requirements and provides employees with safety training applicable to their work processes. Establishes training schedule and tracks compliance for such.
  • Develops recommendations and follow-up to prevent accident recurrence
  • Maintains comprehensive knowledge of government safety regulations
  • Manages Workers Compensation Case Management
  • Directs and coordinates appropriate, timely and cost-effective delivery of health care related to disability, urgent and emergency care, work limitations, transitional return to work plans, accommodations and part-time work for workers compensation and non-workers compensation illness and injury



  • 8-10 years of progressive Safety & Health leadership experience in heavy manufacturing, to include Process Safety Management, site security, and medical.
  • Possesses broad technical expertise, business and industry knowledge, and process and people leadership capabilities.
  • Paper manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Union environment experience preferred.



  • BS Degree required



  • CSP certification is preferred.
