MISSION / SUMMARY: Purchasing Manager will negotiate with vendors for the purchase of all materials, supplies, equipment and services used by the Macon, GA Mill.  The successful candidate will understand and align business operations and purchasing as he/she executes their role to exceed expectations and align with GPI business, cultural, financial and operational objectives.


JOB FUNCTION: Job functions include, but are not limited to the following.

  • Forecasts and negotiates with vendors for goods and services, negotiating the best possible price, availability, suitability and supply/service guarantee.
  • Ensures suppliers are capable of delivering desired goods or services on time and in the correct quantities without sacrificing quality.
  • Establishes Purchasing Policies and ensures compliance.
  • Develops new supply sources where vendors are inadequate.
  • Evaluates suppliers focusing on lean or just-in-time inventories that prevent delays in the supply chain that has the potential of delaying/stopping production leading to customer dissatisfaction and damage to the Company’s reputation.
  • Handles the more complex or critical supply chain activities.
  • Responsible for the operation of the Mill storeroom.
  • Manages the supply chain operation for acquisition of materials parts, machines, supplies, services and other inputs to the production of paper.
  • Purchases raw materials, fabricated parts, machinery, and office supplies.
  • Negotiates and supervises supply contracts.
  • Examines bids and makes awards.
  • Visits prospective supplier plants and distribution sources to evaluate their capabilities.
  • Negotiates blanket purchase orders when appropriate and monitors cost.
  • Checks requisitions for appropriate approval and account numbers.
  • Works closely with Receiving Department to ensure proper supplies arrived.
  • Works closely with Operations and Maintenance to ensure the facility has the right MRO inventory and with the MWS teams to ensure the right critical spares are stocked to assure mill reliability.
  • Traces delinquent arrivals from Purchase Orders.
  • Follows environmental and safety regulations and acts in compliance with US laws.
  • Complies with safety and corporate guidelines on business ethics.

Required Skills


  • Eight to 10 years of purchasing experience, preferably in the pulp and paper industry


  • Bachelor's degree in related field.

SKILLS:  Skills include but not limited to the following.

  • Working technical knowledge of the goods and services to be purchased
  • Negotiating and Forecasting skills
  • Proficient in SAP and with MS Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access
  • Organizational skills for efficient office control are mandatory
  • Ability to communicate professionally with people at all levels of the organization and external contacts
  • Solid decision making skills

Required Experience



  • General schedule is M-F assignment, however, employee must be willing to work alternate schedules occasionally; that may include early mornings, nights, and/or weekends and be punctual while doing so.
  • Occasional overnight travel to include flying, driving, riding or by rail.


  • Sitting or standing for extended periods up to 8-hours.
