MISSION / SUMMARY:

The Superintendent (Paper Machine) PM#2 role is responsible for providing direct oversight of the paper machine operation. The position will directly supervise up to four Shift Supervisors, two Assistant Superintendents, Relief Supervisor, and indirectly supervise a Process Engineer, Maintenance Superintendent, and Maintenance Supervisor.

JOB FUNCTIONS: Job functions include, but are not limited to the following.

  • Accountable for the PM#2 production daily budget of 957 tpd and associated prime and uptime metrics.
  • Leads department safety efforts aligned with Macon mill’s safety plan.  Routinely audits for program and policy adherence with an emphasis on positively recognizing the correct behaviors while proactively addressing safety opportunities.
  • Drives processes that result in exceptional housekeeping results in the department
  • Drives processes that result in exceptional quality results in the department
  • Ensures compliance with environmental regulations; adhere to permit requirements.
  • Leads efforts in pursuit of cost savings initiatives through operational improvements.
  • Develops, plans, and administers material and labor usage.
  • Initiates/facilitates APS efforts and drives action items through to resolution.
  • Works closely with the Maintenance Superintendent and Maintenance Supervisors to ensure efficient execution of troubleshooting, planning and maintenance repair activities.
  • Key participant for annual outage planning.  Ensures the annual outage is completed on time and in accordance to budget.
  • Establishes and provides the operational expertise component of leading and managing our cultural change process, the strategic and forward-thinking capabilities in both the operational and human capital areas of the operation. 
  • Champions standardized work both personally and through her/his direct reports.
  • Administers and implements Labor relations (CBA) through consultation with the Human Resource and Mill Managers.
  • In collaboration with the Production Manager, develops annual budgetary proposals standards for cost measurement.
  • Determines training needs and administers appropriate training programs for salaried and hourly employees on PM2 in order to function in the most reliable manner.
  • Collaborates with the Production Manager in the strategic and capital planning processes for the department.  Supports the project development, construction, implementation, and post project efforts for PM#2 capital items. 
  • Demonstrates strategic planning/thinking by developing a 5-year plan that integrates with and supports the Mill, Division and Company vision.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

BACKGROUND / EXPERIENCE:

  • A minimum of 7 years leadership/supervisory experience in the paper industry.
  • A minimum of 7 years production experience on paper machines required.
  • Coating experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated involvement in the implementation of safety initiatives.
  • Basic SAP experience preferred
  • Knowledgeable of LEAN and Six Sigma principles.
  • Drives executional excellence
  • Decisive with a strong sense of urgency
  • Experience working with hourly represented employees

 

EDUCATION / KNOWLEDGE:

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Paper Science, Mechanical or Chemical engineering preferred but other engineering degree will be considered.
