The R&D Director is responsible for leading the development and implementation of the R&D strategy for the Food Service Industry Segment, including managing the overall project portfolio to ensure alignment with the company’s strategic direction and bringing forward new technology to gain competitive advantage and provide expanded product offerings.  The R&D Director partners with innovation and business unit leaders to develop technical solutions to drive profitable growth.  As GPI is committed to fueling our breakthrough product pipeline with cutting-edge, state-of-the-art technology, the R&D director guides the technology development via technology-based insights and solutions. He or she ensures GPI stays on top of new advances in packaging technologies that can help identify new territories for innovation, maintain knowledge of new and emerging technical and market trends ensuring GPI has the right capabilities (internally and externally) to be a leader in innovation. The R&D Director also has responsibility for the operations, maintenance, safety, customer relations and financial control of the Food Service R&D facility.



  • Responsible for developing and monitoring research and IP development plans for R&D
  • Own the company’s project portfolio and ensures it is balanced in accordance with the strategic direction
  • Explore new scientific technologies and approaches, and determine their applicability, while keeping abreast of competitive products and technology advances
  • Work with Marketing and Business Development to ensure research programs are progressing in accordance with plan and following a stage-gate process
  • Builds the necessary capabilities to ensure the company stays relevant from a technology development perspective
  • Defines and implements mitigation plans to competition threats (anticipates market needs/competitor moves
  • Working collaboratively with the regional organizations, Marketing and Business Development, uses best practice ideation tools to Identify new growth opportunities and drive new programs through Stage-Gate
  • Proactively diagnoses the industry/segment issues/trends, defines corrective actions, and guides the business to grow providing technical insight
  • Explore and assess R&D partnership opportunities with external partners

Required Skills

  • Experience: 10 years of experience in product/technology development and experience leading R&D teams
  • Education: Degree in chemistry, mechanical engineering, materials science, or another applied science. Advanced degree (Masters or PhD) desirable
