Mission/Summary:

The Mechanical Engineering Manager position in the Foodservice Engineering group will manage a team of technical resources to execute strategic and tactical projects in support of GPI’s overall goals in Innovation & Operational Excellence for the Foodservice business. The technical management role is responsible for developing custom converting equipment to enable safety, quality, productivity improvements of existing assets and supporting sourcing of OEM equipment to manufacture paper cups & containers and plastic lids for the Foodservice division. The Mechanical Engineering Manager will have responsibility for the mechanical design of custom converting equipment and will coordinate the assembly and testing of the equipment in collaboration with other technical teams in the Foodservice Engineering group. The role will collaborate with other groups to source, assemble and commissioning of custom developed and OEM equipment. Additional responsibilities include providing engineering support for production equipment. The position is part of a world class engineering & technical team in the Foodservice Engineering and will report to Senior Engineering Manager. 

JOB FUNCTIONS: Job functions include but are not limited to the following. 

Managerial

  • Manage a team of mechanical engineering resources. Recruit and develop mechanical engineering resources to maintain and grow GPI’s technical leadership
  • Manage mechanical engineering design activities and equipment design activities to meet FSB Innovation and FSB Operational Excellence goals
  • Manage direct reports and matrix organization for development projects and ongoing operational support to improve safety, quality and productivity through engineering solutions and continuous improvement work
  • Facilitate, encourage, promote, and engage in teamwork activities. 

Technical

  • Create performance specifications and equipment features for OEM and custom equipment.
  • Concept-to-completion management of mechanical design, component sourcing, assembly, testing and commissioning of custom converting machinery development
  • Detailed design of custom converting equipment using SolidWorks 3D CAD system with integrated PDM system with best practices in engineering design.
  • Coordinate sourcing, fabrication and assembly of tooling, mechanical parts and converting equipment with internal and external resources to meet project deliverables
  • Documentation of design changes through ECR & ECM processes
  • Manage and continuously improve system performance, safety, and ergonomics.
  • Develop and maintain detailed knowhow of the technical landscape in converting machinery for cups, cartons and formed containers 

Managing Though Systems

  • Execute projects and activities interfacing with other functions in a matrix organization
  • Coordinate and support custom equipment assembly collaborating with the technical assembly team in Menomonee Falls
  • Lead and support GPI Innovation projects interfacing with broader GPI Innovation team
  • Provide operational support to FSB plants to meet operational excellence goals
  • Lead and support procurement for OEM equipment to meet capital project goals
  • Manage capital projects for commissioning OEM or custom designed equipment. 

BACKGROUND / EXPERIENCE:

  • 5-10 years relevant experience in equipment design; preferably high speed/precision equipment
  • Experience working in a matrix environment
  • Six Sigma Certification, PMP certification, preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in design of paperboard converting equipment preferred
  • Demonstrated experience with design for manufacturability (DFM and design for assembly (DFA)
  • Experience managing and developing technical teams
  • Project management experience with demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects 

EDUCATION / KNOWLEDGE:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering/Industrial Engineering Required
  • S. or Advanced Degree in engineering discipline preferred
  • Knowledge/experience in advanced concepts Automation/FEA/Vibration Analysis/CFD desirable 

SKILLS:

  • Extensive CAD skills, SolidWorks preferred.
  • Deep understanding of electro-mechanical components, including PLC and drive motor controls required
  • Must have demonstrated oral and written communication and organizational skills, including presenting to senior leadership.
  • Must be able to work in a professional team environment. 

SCHEDULE DEMANDS: 

  • General schedule is an 8-hour M-F assignment, however, employee must be willing to work alternate schedules in special situations which may include early mornings, nights, and/or weekends.
  • Up to 30% travel to manufacturing facilities, suppliers, and customers – including international travel.
