The Shift Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for the repair, maintenance and installation of any and all plant production and service equipment including mechanical, hydraulic, steam, water and air, perform building maintenance or repair including rigging for felt and fabric change and minor electrical repairs.

Employee must function at high levels of quality and efficiency while maintaining the highest standard of safety.

 

JOB FUNCTIONS: Job functions include, but are not limited to the following.

  • Perform installation, maintenance and repair on all Mill equipment with the aid of blueprints, sketches, or verbal instructions as directed by Maintenance or Mill Supervision.
  • Operate motor starter breakers and disconnects, and reset motor starter overloads and digital drives.
  • Perform troubleshooting as necessary.        
  • Perform preventative maintenance inspections each shift.
  • Perform pipefitting plumbing work on all types of pipe lines, valves and fixtures.
  • Direct the work of Apprentices and Mill personnel assigned to the job by Supervision.
  • Perform rough carpentry work as required.
  • Must be able to mix, pour and finish cement for foundations, bases, floor repair and other building maintenance.
  • Keep the power truck clean and watch for any defects in its operation.  Report necessary repair or maintenance work to the supervisor.  Exercise caution and care in the operation of material handling equipment.
  • May be assigned to various jobs for training purposes at any time.
  • Maintain supplies to the paper machine and housekeeping of the manufacturing areas.
  • Performs duties of a labor nature in the Mill area or other areas as assigned.
  • Diligently practices good safety and housekeeping techniques in accordance with the Shop Rules, Safety Rules and Safety Absolutes.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

BACKGROUND / EXPERIENCE:

  • Manufacturing and or Mill experience strongly preferred.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

EDUCATION / KNOWLEDGE:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must have Journeyman Certificate
  • Must have a 4 year Mechanical or Electrical Apprenticeship or equivalent experience
  • Must be able to read and interpret information sheets.
  • Basic electrical troubleshooting skills / repairs.

 

SPECIFIC SKILLS:

  • Must be able to weld steel and stainless steel, and to use cutting torch and to braze.
  • Must be able to use various computer software programs for our production and shipping systems.
  • Must be able to use Maintenance Shop tools and power tools.
  • Job requires working around production equipment while it is in operation and requires climbing ladders and working from girders and scaffolding.
  • Job requires exposure to weather, dirt, grease, fumes and heat.
  • Must have knowledge of methods of lifting heavy equipment, which includes the use of chain blocks, rope blocks, slings, hitches and overhead cranes.

 

SCHEDULE DEMANDS:

  • Follows mode schedule for plant, rotating shifts (Southern Swing) and be punctual while doing so.
  • Expected to cover vacancy for absent peers and work overtime.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Standing for extended periods.
  • Awkward and/or repetitive movements.
  • Moving or lifting of equipment, materials, and tools up to 50 lbs repeatedly for an 8 hr. shift.
  • Climbing extension ladders, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or movement within

confined areas.

  • Work in buildings and areas of fluctuating temperature and weather.
