SUMMARY:
The PM Assistant Superintendent position reports directly to the Paper Machine Superintendent. This position will provide direct leadership and supervision for all aspects of the paper machine, including safety, acceptance, availability, engagement, equipment reliability, quality complaints, cost control, and continuous improvement strategy deployment.
The PM Assistant Superintendent will also be involved with maintenance, process improvements and machine changes. Though having no direct reports, the Assistant Superintendent will have a strong influential position and direct authority for decision making with respect to the machine in general, and the operation in particular. This position will require being on-call some weekends and weeknights.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to the following
- Utilize and refine standard work systems to effect sustainable positive results in safety, environmental, people, housekeeping, quality, cost, and performance.
- Demonstrate safety as a core value by creating a safe work environment.
- Steward safety systems and processes that support achieving our continually improving annual goals.
- Ensure efficient operation of wood product line, including Brown stock, bleach plant and chemical areas.
- Develop and manage Front Line Leaders through mentorship, coaching and accountability methods.
- Collaborates with all levels of management personnel to establish production and quality control standards, develop budgets and cost controls to help ensure long term sustainability.
- Manage all area production activities and establish area production priorities to ensure effective operations and cost factors
- Monitor and manage Key Process Indicators
- Implement improvement strategies designed to: support productivity, increase yield and operating efficiency, reduce cost, and improve reliability.
- Enforce strict safety standards and practices. Be aware of existing safety hazards and make every feasible attempt to correct these hazards
- Provide input on capital projects and strategic improvement plans for all other Mill areas
- Ensure there is effective communication of business strategy, goals, and initiatives to Font Line Leaders and production crews
- Manage continuous improvement projects for area of responsibility
- Coordinates with maintenance to prioritize maintenance and outage needs
- Coordinates predictive and preventative maintenance activities with Maintenance Department establishing long-term sustainability for equipment
- Implement and improve standard work systems such as trouble cause corrections, standard operating procedures, startup/shutdown checklists, and centerlines
- Maintain effective communications and working relationships with Operations Departments, Maintenance, Safety, IT, Environmental, Human Resources, Engineering, Purchasing and Suppliers,
- Collaborate with Training Department to ensure training needs and priorities are being met.

EDUCATION / KNOWLEDGE:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Paper Science or 10 years of related field operations experience within the paper industry including three (3-5) years of progressive leadership roles
- Eight (8) years of progressive and practical pulpmill experience including three (3-5) years of pulpmill supervisory experience
- Comprehensive knowledge of the operation of an integrated mill
SPECIFIC SKILLS:
- Proven record of identifying opportunities and the ability to recommend and implement improvements.
- Must be a leader with exceptional communication skills, good organization, and the ability to communicate with all levels of the organization.
- Previous environmental experience in the Pulp and Paper industry is a plus.
- Good interpersonal skills; ability to positively influence people
- Good organizational skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to motivate people to perform at higher levels
- Ability to demonstrate strong leadership and teamwork to ensure safe and efficient operations.
- Ability to align with and champion company and mill policies and procedures.

- Proficient at managing all levels of an operating area and interfacing with all levels of an organization
- Troubleshooting and Problem-solving skills
SCHEDULE DEMANDS:
- General schedule is an 8-hour M-F assignment, however, employee must be willing to work alternate schedules occasionally; that may include early mornings, nights, and/or weekends and be punctual while doing so.
- Occasional overnight travel
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Sitting or standing for extended periods up to 8-hours.
- Occasional Lifting up to 20 lbs.
- Wear PPE when required: Hard Hat, safety glasses, hearing protection etc.
- Reading computer screen or other electronic devices.
- Use of various office hand and electrical tools or equipment.
- Confined space entry of equipment and vessels during outages.
- Walking down all process areas and equipment.

Pay Range: $97,400.00 - $129,900.00
