Mission Summary:

Graphic Packaging – Portland is a leading global supplier of innovative wood-fiber packaging.  This mission of the Product Development Engineer position is to develop the next generation of products utilizing paper, plastic extrusion coating and aqueous coating technologies, transfer these technologies, administer product and process specifications, qualify alternative raw materials, troubleshoot quality issues, identify cost savings, run trials, and continuously improve existing products and processing methods.


Key Responsibilities (job responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following):

  • In conjunction with Sales; Business Development and corporate technical community, develop new packaging opportunities that lead to higher profitability
  • Identify and develop the next generation of sustainable products for the future
  • Coordinate “trials” including establishing customer design objectives, securing raw materials, assisting plant personnel during trials, evaluating field performance, and documenting trial results.
  • Provide sales technical support, conduct competitive analysis, recommend packaging structures, and investigate, analyze, and follow-up with customer concerns/complaints.
  • Administer product and process specification issuance and maintenance.
  • Identify and plan strategic process development necessary to support future sales growth.
  • Serve as a technical expert and resource on assigned products
  • Conduct process capability studies in conjunction with plant, customer and suppliers.
  • Develop and administer Quality Assurance Controls function to ensure that product specifications are consistently met.
  • Visit the customer and bring key information back to the plant
  • Apply technical knowledge to achieve cost reduction opportunities.
  • Investigate current technologies for application toward improving existing products/ processes. Identify opportunities and direct efforts to improve existing products including improvement of yield and productivity. Develop process improvements for products.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
  • Must be able to work 8 hours/day plus overtime as required.


  • 1-2 years’ experience in product development (R & D) or technical.
  • Experience with flexible packaging converting equipment (coaters, extruders, presses, and slitting machines) is a plus


  • Bachelor of Science or MS – in a technical area, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Engineering, or Paper Science preferred
  • Knowledge of standard engineering practices
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma
