MISSION / SUMMARY:

The Shipping Manager is the lead position in the Production, Scheduling, and Distribution Department (PS&D). This position reports to the Plant Manager.

 

JOB FUNCTIONSJob functions include, but are not limited to the following:

 

  • Exhibiting safety leadership and encouraging safety engagement.
  • Responsible for safe work environment, including conducting safety meetings and training, observations and correcting unsafe behaviors and conditions, and proactively supporting department and facility leadership in the continuous improvement of safety systems. Support RIR, LTI and zero OSHA serious injuries according to company goals.
  • Drive area continuous improvements initiatives from conception through implementation, to improve area efficiency, reduce costs, and improve reliability.
  • Provide proactive support to foster and improve operator engagement and morale within the department.
  • Effective communication with department and facility leadership, operators, and facility liaisons.
  • The Shipping Manager will have responsibility for the Shipping and Receiving area of the business to include equipment, processes, and people.
  • The PS&D department has the responsibility for scheduling Production runs to include inbound and outbound material movements and railcar management.
  • Coordinating with Corporate scheduling for inbound material and Production scheduling.
  • Ensuring we have enough raw material for production runs and maintaining finished goods inventory.
  • Manage Job Lot and Waste streams.
  • Manages rail demurrage and truck detention processes to minimize accessorial costs, ensure timely equipment turnover, and maintain strong carrier relationships.
  • Maintain all process equipment such as forklifts, clamp trucks, rail king, yard dog, and a basestock and finished goods warehouse that holds 3,500 tons of roll stock; additionally, an onsite auxiliary warehouse that contains overflow stock.
  • This position is responsible for interfacing with and managing the efforts of an offsite external warehouse.
  • Communicating daily with schedulers for the paper machines to ensure our extrusion orders are correct and on time.
  • Develops, analyzes, and clearly communicates daily operational statistics to support informed decision‑making across teams.
  • The facility ships paper by both truck and rail. There are approximately 13 hourly operations personnel and 2 salaried personnel who will be under the leadership of this position.
  • Supporting crew training, blended learning, and certification activities.
  • Support employee development by assisting in training, certification, hiring, and employee evaluations and one-on-ones for direct reports.
  • Provides proactive support to fellow lead team members by coordinating tasks, sharing insights, and ensuring smooth cross‑functional collaboration.
  • Creating and maintaining a department shift work schedule.

 

BACKGROUND / EXPERIENCE:

 

  • A minimum of 5 years of shipping and logistics experience in the Paper Manufacturing or Paper Products Converting area is preferred.
  • Prior experience in coated board is desired.
  • Proficient with roll handling and order entry software processes; specifically, with SAP.
  • Demonstrated record of safety commitment and results.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with groups and individuals at all levels.
  • History of experience and use of Lean Manufacturing tools/concepts is desired.
  • Demonstrated leadership focused on accountability and results.
  • Prior experience with monthly forecasting.
  • Prior experience with Powered Industrial Trucks in a warehouse and paper roll handling application is preferred.
  • Prior experience and working knowledge of safe roll handling / loading procedures and practices.
  • Prior experience in supply chain management.

 

EDUCATION / KNOWLEDGE:

 

  • BA or BS in Business Management, Engineering or related field of study is preferred.
  • A high school diploma and 5+ years of experience in paper manufacturing or converting field may be considered as a substitute for degree.

 

SCHEDULE DEMANDS:

 

General schedule is day shift; M-F assignment, however, employee must be willing to work alternate schedules occasionally; that may include early mornings, nights, and/or weekends and be punctual while doing so.

 

Must be able to take after-hour calls.

 

Occasional overnight travel includes flying, driving, riding or by rail.

  

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

 

Sitting or standing for extended periods up to 8 hours.

Occasional Lifting up to 20 lbs.

Reading computer screens or other electronic devices.

Use of various office hand and electrical tools or equipment.

Ability to physically move about a warehouse environment including accessing roll handling equipment.

Pay Range:   $72,700.00 - $96,900.00
