Role Summary

This position is responsible for operating and maintaining the Texarkana Water Utilities Public Water System (PWS) located at the GPI-Texarkana Mill in compliance with state and federal drinking water regulations.  The PWS supplies about 32 million gallons of treated water a day for the operations of the mill, and about 1 million gallons of treated water a day for potable water for the mill itself and the local communities of Atlanta and Domino.

Job Accountabilities

  • Uses standard work practices and standard operating procedures to perform daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual activities required to maintain the PWS in compliance with all regulations
  • Monitors treatment process in water plant control room and makes necessary adjustments as indicated by current conditions; makes process control decisions
  • Trend raw water intake, clarifiers, sand filters, Clearwell, granulated activated carbon filters, and all associated equipment including turbidimeters, pumps, and filters used for water treatment
  • Collects samples and completes chemical tests/analysis including residual chlorine, pH, temperature, alum dosage, color, clarifier flocculant and other testing required to monitor water treatment process; calculates and adjusts chemical dosages
  • Inspects valves, pumps, gauges, and other equipment on a scheduled basis
  • Prepares daily logs, inspection sheets, and examines and interprets trend charts; prepares daily reports of analysis and test results for mill and regulatory agencies; maintains records; enters data into computer. Analyze results to identify any issues and adjust treatment process.
  • Performs housekeeping of equipment, grounds, and work areas
  • May be called in after hours to respond to emergencies
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Must be able to lift to 40 lbs.
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal water quality regulations and safety standards.
  • Communicate with Supervision, other technicians, and maintenance regarding daily water quality issues/ treatment.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • A valid Class C or Class B Surface Water Treatment Plant Operator’s license

OR

  • A valid Class C Surface Water Treatment Plant Operator’s license within two years of hire
  • Knowledge of mill safety policies and procedures
  • Proficient in basic computer use
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills, critical for sharing information with supervisor and between shifts
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Must pass drug test and background check
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Work rotating shift schedule.
  • Work in adverse environmental conditions.
