The Environmental Engineer is responsible for leading the Environmental Function at the Shelbyville location. Under general guidance of the HSE (Health, Safety, Environmental Manager he/she is responsible for managing the environmental aspects of the GPI HSE Management System and related matters to safeguard the environment for a 113+ acre location housing 5 manufacturing, warehousing and distribution facilities, totaling 1,219,644 square feet, and with a large employee base of employees. He/she is responsible for ensuring compliance with all applicable federal, state and local regulations and Graphic Packaging International (GPI) guidelines.
A strong history of sustained results, leadership, prioritization, coordination and consistent deployment of strategy, customer service and compliance are requirements for this position. Direct responsibilities include environmental regulatory compliance and agency and community interaction. The individual works cross-functionally to develop relationships to achieve compliance, positive employee, and community relations, influences to create a positive HSE culture and drives results that achieve positive business performance. The individual will influence proactively in a dynamic work environment. Expected results focus on driving a proactive, sustainable, and continuously improving HSE management system, developing, and enhancing employee environmental knowledge, innovating transformation, and performing with excellence.
JOB FUNCTIONS: Job functions include but are not limited to the following.
- Collect, analyze, and maintain data for required regulatory reporting.
- Prepare, review and update environmental reports
- Obtain, update, and maintain plans, permits, and standard operating procedures
- Design and/or maintain projects that lead to environmental protection, such as water reclamation facilities, air pollution control systems
- Analyze data and do quality-control checks
- Emissions monitoring
- Drives compliance with local, state, and federal programs ensuring good standing with agencies (including but not limited to OSHA, IEPA, EPA, IEMA)
- Understanding of hazardous wastes vs non hazard wastes classifications and cradle-to-grave control/responsibility
- Understanding of CAAPP and FESOP criteria
- SWPPP – Stormwater pollution prevention plan
- Work with departments to control and properly dispose of environmental waste
- Understanding or ability to learn applications of polypropylene, polystyrene, and polyethylene and how it relates to environmental tasks
- Ionizing and non-ionizing radiation sources and permitted laser/s
- Maintains up-to-date, comprehensive knowledge of federal/state/local environmental laws, EPA regulations, and corporate policies.
- Develops and implements environmental guidelines and best practices.
- Develops and provides training on key environmental issues, permitting, and environmental requirements.
- Builds solid working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Plans and leads self-assessments to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Maintains environmental programs to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state and local regulations and in support of Graphic Packaging Corporation’s (GPC) environmental guidelines. This includes the site’s Title V permitting.
- Ensures required safety and environmental training has been identified and completed for new and existing employees. Oversees the execution of employee training on the regulatory standards applicable to the facility, and internal environmental policies and procedures.
- Provides support for on-going HSE projects, problem solving, investigations including site inspections and audits, and safety activities
- Inspects property, equipment, and work practices for compliance with regulatory and insurance carrier standards.
- Maintains effective HSE communication process to make HSE priorities and performance visible
- Facilitates and participates in job safety analysis, process hazard analysis with preference for engineering solutions and ‘doing it right the first time' concept.
- Researches and keeps informed of pertinent information and developments in areas such as state and federal laws and regulations such as OSHA, USEPA and ILEPA.
- Monitors the completion of action items generated, EHS and security audits, inspections and incident investigations
- Other duties as assigned.
BACKGROUND / EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in HSE in industrial manufacturing environment, preferred.
- Prior supervisory experience.
EDUCATION / KNOWLEDGE:
- Bachelor's Degree (Engineering, Chemistry, Environmental, or similar discipline)
- Master’s Degree, preferred.
- Advanced environmental certification, preferred.
- Experience in manufacturing, paper products, printing, or packaging industries, preferred.

Pay Range: $68,900.00 - $91,800.00
