The Health, Safety & Environmental Manager is a key member of the Shelbyville leadership team. Under general guidance of the Plant Manager and the Corporate Business Manager - Environmental, Health and Safety, he/she is responsible for promoting, maintaining and implementing systems of accountability for excellence in the areas of health, safety and environmental for a 113+ acre location housing 5 manufacturing, warehousing and distribution facilities, totaling 1,219,644 square feet, and with a large employee base of employees. He/she is responsible for ensuring compliance with all applicable federal, state and local regulations and Graphic Packaging International (GPI) guidelines. He/she is responsible for overseeing the prevention and/or correction of unsafe working and environmental conditions. He/she is responsible in driving initiatives to identify and develop processes to increase safety awareness, effectiveness, and efficiency.
JOB FUNCTIONS: Job functions include but are not limited to the following.
- Maintains written safety and health programs to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state and local safety & health standards and in support of Graphic Packaging Corporation’s (GPC) safety and health guidelines and minimum safety and health guidelines.
- Maintains environmental programs to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state and local regulations and in support of Graphic Packaging Corporation’s (GPC) environmental guidelines. This includes the site’s Title V permitting.
- Maintains workers’ compensation program in support to ensure compliance with Illinois Workers’ Compensation Act.
- Ensures required safety and environmental training has been identified and completed for new and existing employees. Oversees the execution of employee training on the regulatory standards applicable to the facility, and internal HSE policy and procedures.
- Provides technical support for on-going HSE projects, problem solving, investigations including site inspections and audits, and safety activities
- Inspects property, equipment, and work practices for compliance with regulatory and insurance carrier standards.
- Maintains effective HSE communication process to make HSE priorities and performance visible
- Maintains injury records and communicates safety related information as required.
- Facilitates and participates in job safety analysis, process hazard analysis with preference for engineering solutions and ‘doing it right the first time' concept.
- Provides oversite and leadership to plant employee safety (JETS) teams, charged with driving safety engagement and improvements throughout the facility.
- Oversees incident investigation process to identify root causes. Ensure proper documentation of findings and implementation of corrective actions. Enforces company policy related to drug testing and disciplinary action. Manage post-accident return to work accommodations.
- Organizes and maintains HSE performance, compliance, policy and procedural information including electronic backup of critical information
- Develops and implements industry best practice systems for an effective HSE program while maintaining compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, reporting, HSE statistics and trend analysis
- Researches and keeps informed of pertinent information and developments in areas such as state and federal laws and regulations such as OSHA, USEPA and ILEPA.
- Monitors the completion of action items generated, EHS and security audits, inspections and incident investigations
- Provides on-the-floor EHS coaching and recognition; and assists with implementation and support of EHS responsibilities
- Other duties as assigned.
BACKGROUND / EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in HSE in industrial manufacturing environment, preferred.
- Prior supervisory experience.
EDUCATION / KNOWLEDGE:
- Bachelor's Degree (Engineering, Chemistry, Environmental, Occupational Safety, or similar discipline)
- Master’s Degree, preferred.
- Advanced safety or environmental certification, preferred.

- Passion for EHS as demonstrated by a strong experience and commitment
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required to collaborate, communicate effectively with, and influence all levels of employees, various manufacturing and staff departments within the facility, and with groups outside the facility.
- Strong, engaging, people-centered leadership style
- Project management skills; Demonstrated ability to develop and implement HSE programs and processes.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and effectively deliver training.
- Software Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint).
- Strong analytical, critical thinking and organizational skills, and detail orientation.
- Demonstrated ability to utilize time management and multi-tasking skill.
- Demonstrated ability to implement creative solutions. Takes initiative and is self-directed.
- High level of integrity, strong work ethic, good judgment and problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated ability to work independently without a great need of supervision.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects at one time.

Pay Range: $83,300.00 - $111,100.00
