JOB SUMMARY:
Set up, adjust and operate the multi-color printing press. Duties also include: mounting and demounting printing press plates to sleeves and cylinders, adjusting ink to meet printing standards, and correcting paperwork for each job and press to which assigned.
WORK DEVICES:
Air hose, air mount sleeves, banding machine, doctor blades, flexo cylinders, hoist, ink pumps, inks, knives, grease guns, masking tape, open-end wrenches, PM2 splicing tape, paper roll stock, paper waste, pipe wind, press gears, printing plates, rags, rubber plates, ruler, screwdrivers, tape measure.
DESCRIPTION OF TASKS:
- Perform all duties in a safe and orderly manner.
- Actively engaged, involved, and current in SWO process; Participate in safety meetings and safety tours.
- Ensure production of products consistent with established food safety, sanitation and quality standards.
- Set up multi-color printing press to produce standard quality units of various types and sizes with proper color, coverage and registration.
- Maintain continuous operation of press by performance of such duties: adjust ink flow, replenish inks, and adjust plates for proper registration. Clean plates periodically, remove jams or web breaks and report irregularities to the supervisor as they occur.
- Perform operations such as: wash plates, ink fountains and ink rollers, lubricate, PM and clean press according to schedule, mount and/or demount printing plates, clean and change doctor blades.
- Mount printing plates by use of optical Mounter-Proofer
- Splice and/or thread paper through a press: Inspect paper roll stock for adherence to specifications and reject paper obviously defective.
- Remove rolls from rewind stand, put on proper identification flags, and band rolls.
- Report to supervisor and/or group leader major jams or improper product.
- Continuously check quality of product being printed.
- Keep assigned area and equipment clean and orderly; Perform preventive maintenance on the equipment.
- Once qualified, instruct and train others.
- Manage workload as necessary to ensure production requirements are met.
- Communicate effectively with oncoming shift.
- Fulfill overtime requirements necessary to ensure production requirements are met.
- Assist in other areas or perform other duties, as assigned.
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Basic mechanical background. Must have the skills necessary to perform technical tasks.
- Basic mathematic skills.
- Able to use hand tools properly and safely.
- Able to work in a fast-paced, multi-task environment.
- Demonstrated organizational skills and detail orientation.
- Self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to follow verbal or written instructions.
- Ability to perform the essential physical functions of the position, with or without accommodation.
- Must pass color blindness test.
ADDTIONAL IMPORTANT INFORMATION
- When a Press Operator vacancy occurs, the employee with the most time served as an Apprentice must take that vacancy after shift preferences have occurred, and will continue with the apprentice qualification timeline until qualified. Unqualified Apprentices may not bid on open positions.
- If no Press Operator vacancies occur after the employee has been an Apprentice for 3 years, they may bid out or disqualify themselves.
- Apprentices will be paid up to the 18 month rate and will be eligible for the 24 month rate only after being permanently assigned as a Press Operator for 6 months.
- After becoming a Press Operator (24 months), the employee cannot bid out for 18 months. This is a 42-month commitment.
- Outside of this, shift assignments will not change unless business conditions require it.
