Press Operator Trainee - Printing

  • $1500 Retention Bonus for New Hires and Qualifying Rehires
  • Starting Wages Begin At $19.24/Hour with Regular Wage Progressions to $24.18

What you will be doing:

Set up, adjust, and operate the multi-color printing press. Duties also include: mounting and demounting printing press plates to sleeves and cylinders, adjusting ink to meet printing standards, and correcting paperwork for each job and press to which assigned.

DESCRIPTION OF TASKS:

  • Ensure production of products consistent with established food safety, sanitation, and quality standards.
  • Set up multi-color printing press to produce standard quality units of various types and sizes with proper color, coverage, and registration.
  • Maintain continuous operation of press by performance of such duties: adjust ink flow, replenish inks, and adjust plates for proper registration. Clean plates periodically, remove jams or web breaks and report irregularities to the supervisor as they occur.
  • Perform operations such as: wash plates, ink fountains and ink rollers, lubricate, PM and clean press according to schedule, mount and/or demount printing plates, clean and change doctor blades.
  • Mount printing plates by use of optical Mounter-Proofer
  • Splice and/or thread paper through a press: Inspect paper roll stock for adherence to specifications and reject paper obviously defective.
  • Remove rolls from rewind stand, put on proper identification flags, and band rolls.
  • Continuously check quality of product being printed.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on the equipment.
  • Once qualified, instruct and train others.
  • Communicate effectively with oncoming shift.
  • Assist in other areas or perform other duties, as assigned.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE:

  • Basic mechanical background and skill level to perform technical tasks:
  • Familiar with and able to use hand and power tools properly and safely
  • Familiar with mechanical components and equipment
  • Basic troubleshooting skills
  • Experience and ability to work in a fast-paced/multi-tasked manufacturing environment.
  • Basic mathematic skills.
  • Ability to perform the essential physical functions of the position, with or without accommodation.

ADDITIONAL IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

Employees must pass skills assessments according to the timeline below before moving to next training tier and labor grade. Employees who fail to complete training tiers and pass a skills assessment are subject to disqualification.

Tier I Training – LG 5, $19.24 start

Tier I Training is a 4-month training tier. At the end of the Tier I Training, apprentices will complete a hands-on Skills Assessment. Trainees that successfully pass Tier I Skills Assessment will move to Tier II Training. If a trainee fails Tier I Skills Assessment, an additional 30 days of training will be provided with re-assessment at the end of 30 days.

Tier II Training – LG 6, $21.62 start, progressing to $21.83 at 6 months

Tier II Training is an 8-month training tier. At the end of the Tier II Training, trainees will complete a hands-on Skills Assessment. Trainees that successfully pass Tier II Skills Assessment will move to Tier III Training. If a trainee fails Tier II Skills Assessment, an additional 30 days of training will be provided with re-assessment at the end of 30 days.

Tier III Training – LG 7, $22.29 start, progressing to $24.18 at 12 months

Tier III Training is a 12-month training tier. At the end of Tier III Training, trainees will complete a hands-on Skills Assessment. Trainees that successfully pass Tier III Skills Assessment will be a qualified Press Operator. If an apprentice fails Tier III Skills Assessment, an additional 30 days of training will be provided with re-assessment at the end of 30 days.

*Training will occur on the shift where a qualified operator is needed.
