The Transportation Superintendent role is responsible for the safety, employee engagement, productivity, quality, and customer service associated with a multi-shift distribution operation. The individual in this role is responsible for overall planning, assigning, and directing the work of the distribution workforce.  The individual in this role is also responsible for ensuring the Transportation supervisor team remains focused on workforce training and development, appraising performance; recognizing and rewarding workforce accomplishments; holding workforce accountable to established standard; and, investigating and addressing workforce concerns. The individual in this role is responsible for executing the role in a manner that ensures an understanding of and alignment with business operations, customer service expectations, and GPI business, cultural, financial, and operational objectives.

 

PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Work directly with and provides leadership to four (4) Transportation Supervisors, each with responsibility for a workforce of approximately 25 /- employees per shift.
  • Oversee daily Transportation operations to ensure efficiency and overall productivity meets or exceeds established standards
  • Overall responsibility for ensuring materials, supplies, vehicles, equipment are maintained to specifications and to minimize operational impact.
  • Ensure achievement of safety goals through developing and supporting a culture of following defined safety procedures, encouraging involvement, following up on safety concerns, and modeling proper safe behaviors. Partner directly with HSE, as needed, to ensure adherence to safety and environmental standards.
  • Ensure desired level of employee engagement within the Transportation operation. This includes developing and supporting a culture of listening and responding to employee issues, taking decisive actions, recognizing excellent performance, and holding employees to defined standards, when necessary.
  • Ensure achievement of quality goals, ensuring employees are trained on quality standards, following quality procedures, and performing requisite inspections. Partner directly with QA, as needed to ensure adherence to customer quality standards.
  • Ensure achievement of productivity goals by establishing and communicating clear objectives, providing requisite resources to direct reports, engaging the workforce and setting appropriate priorities / monitoring progress.
  • Administer, communicate, and interpret work procedures and company policies.
  • Proactively identify, develop, recommend, and implement Transportation operations policies.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with all departments of the plant, vendors, suppliers.
  • Participate in the development and execution of Transportation budget.
  • Effectively communicate within organization on key issues (e.g., performance reviews, 1-on-1’s, safety meetings, overtime plans, monthly business results, etc.)
  • Provide direct reports with support and guidance in their roles. Evaluate job performance of direct reports.

Required Skills

BACKGROUND / EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of 5 years of work experience in Manufacturing, preferably in a warehousing, transportation, or logistics environment, which includes exposure to manufacturing operations.
  • 3-5 years of supervisory experience.

 

EDUCATION / KNOWLEDGE:

  • Bachelor’s degree (Industrial Engineering, Production Management, Business Administration, or related field) strongly preferred.
  • Related work experience required in lieu of degree.

 

SKILLS:

  • Strong strategic, analytical problem-solving ability (TCC/Trouble Cause Correction)
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills; ability to motivate and lead a team, including train, coach, mentor, and counsel
  • Demonstrated knowledge of process improvement methodologies (Lean, Six Sigma, 5S or other discipline)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong safety and product quality orientation.
  • Computer skills with a focus on Microsoft office applications, QAD experience (preferred)
  • Ability to work independently, in partnership with others, and across departments and functions, to achieve goals.
  • Ability to perform the essential physical functions of the position, with or without accommodation.
