Title:  Continuous Improvement Manager

Graphic Packaging International is searching for a high energy, take-charge CI (Quality) Manager to lead our Quality Department at our Solon Ohio facility. Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Works safely at all times and ensure employees in the department adhere to all safety rules.
  • Is a member of the plant’s Senior Leadership Team.
  • Recruits, selects, and develops talent and promotes the Company’s growth agenda.
  • Plans, directs, and manages the Quality Department to achieve operating goals and objectives consistent with plant and divisional objectives. 
  • Ensures production operations are conducted in a safe clean working environment that complies with federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Works effectively with all department management to resolve issues and coordinate efforts to achieve Plans, coordinates, and directs quality control program designed to ensure continuous production of products consistent with established standards.
  • Direct the activities of suppliers, production employees, and customers to resolve quality problems and continuously improve the level of quality. 
  • Provides technical training and support to management and employees with regards to the plant’s product safety programs (HACCP, SQF, Food Defense, etc.) and Lean initiatives.
  • Develop closed-loop quality system driven to reduce process variation and ensure plant compliance.
  • Formulate and maintain quality control objectives and coordinates objectives with production procedures in cooperation with other plant managers and/or CI Organization to maximize product reliability and minimize costs.
  • Develop and implement product quality plans and procedures by overseeing gauge requirements, frequency, responsibility and methods to ensure compliance to process and product specifications.
  • Direct, through intermediate personnel, workers engaged in inspection and testing activities to ensure quality control over raw materials and final products.
  • Oversee Chain of Custody Certification Program
  • Plan, promote, and organize training activities related to product quality and reliability.
  • Serve as customer contact for quality issues.
  • Represent Graphic Packaging at customer locations.
  • Respond to, evaluate, and resolve customer complaints
  • Track and manage customer feedback regarding quality.
  • Direct activities, duties, and projects of QC Inspectors.
  • Implement practices and controls to drive an effective supplier management system.
  • Work with Raw material vendors on material specifications and process/track vendor complaints
  • Oversee new business transition.
  • Oversee Continuous Improvement website for local plant.
  • Manage customer specification system.
  • Oversee trials and create and communicate trial plans.
  • Oversees and provides guidance in the areas of plant Functional Control / Pre-Requisite programs including:  pest control, operational methods, personnel practices, comprehensive Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), Food defense, and facility maintenance as it relates to product safety, housekeeping, and cleaning practices.
  • Communicates observations and implements corrective actions that should be taken.
  • Ensures plant’s compliance to 3rd party Functional Control / Pre-Requisite program requirements including:  HACCP, SQF, and other customer-mandated programs.
  • Conducts annual training in HACCP, GMP’s, Food defense, and Allergens.
  • Site SQF practitioner responsible for the deployment and management of SQF.
  • Evaluates vendor performance.
  • Provides support in the plant’s Lean activities.
  • Seeks out cost reduction opportunities in functional areas of responsibility.

Required Skills

Skills and Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent, required
  • Post-secondary education, preferred
  • 5 years’ experience working in manufacturing, required
  • 3 years’ experience as a supervisor, required
  • 3 years’ experience as a Quality Department Manager, preferred
  • Experience working in paper industry, preferred
  • Experience with MS Suite (Excel, Word, PPT), required
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, required
  • High degree of customer service orientation, required
  • Good understanding of the principles of Lean, preferred
  • Experience reading and writing reports, preferred
  • High energy, required
  • Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills, required
  • Strong math skills, required
  • Must be inquisitive and flexibly
  • Must be a self-starter

Physical Demands:

  • Works both on shop floor and in office setting occasionally
  • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time
  • Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs
  • Reading computer screen or other electronic devices
  • Use of various office hand and electrical tools or equipment
