The Solon OH plant has an immediate need for a qualified Safety Manager. The Solon plant is a part of the Consumer Products Division producing sheet fed/specialty cartons. The site has approximately 200 employees, 162 of which are hourly and covered by a collective bargaining agreement with the United Steelworkers Union. The Safety Manager will provide world class expertise to fully support the Solon Carton’s safety objectives through demonstrated leadership. This position is a member of the plant senior leadership team directly responsible for managing the safety systems ensuring the health and welfare of all employees, vendors, contractors, visitors, etc.


JOB FUNCTION: Job functions include, but are not limited to the following.

  • Accountable for setting direction and deploying safety, health resources in a union environment within GPI
  • Develops plans and delivers results in a fast changing business and regulatory environment by participating in Plant Divisional safety initiatives that drive safety process improvements.
  • Provides input to Plant and departmental strategy
  • Coordinate and drive the Plant Safety Committee reviews. Participate, provide guidance and support for area safety team meetings
  • Manages the safety direction for all persons on company premise
  • Contributes directly to Plant priorities and planning
  • Coordinates the daily activities of safety, health in support of the operations team
  • Establishes methodologies for measuring the effectiveness of plant compliance with OSHA, state and other federal laws
  • Provides solutions to complex safety, health and security issues serving as the senior safety leader i.e. best practice/quality safety and health resource, technical expert, train/mentors managers, supervisors and  staff
  • Conducts studies and investigations to ensure compliance with government safety and health laws, standards and regulations, and industrial hygiene.  Established a rapport with local fire, police, and sheriff departments
  • Investigates accidents and promotes safety-conscious work performance and training programs with defined safety performance measures including A3 and other data mining processes for hazard analysis and corrective actions on Plant incidents driving for root cause analysis 
  • Designs, develops, implements and oversees the organization's health, safety and security programs and procedures including First Responders, OSHA Audiometric and Respirator fit testing, etc.
  • Safeguards employees and surrounding community by ensuring all site facilities are in compliance with regulations. Works closely with OSHA officials, state police, Hazmat, community representatives, and other officials as required
  • Manages the safety audits of buildings, facilities, tools and equipment
  • Determines safety training requirements and provides employees with safety training applicable to their work processes. Establishes training schedule for Focus and/or other behavioral based training and tracking improvement actions.
  • Develops recommendations and follow-up to prevent accident recurrence
  • Maintains comprehensive knowledge of government safety regulations

Required Skills


  • 5-10 years of progressive Safety & Health leadership experience in heavy manufacturing, to include Process Safety Management and medical.
  • Possesses broad technical expertise, business and industry knowledge, and process and people leadership capabilities.
  • Paper manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Union environment experience required.



  • BS Degree required; graduate degree desirable.





  • CSP certification is preferred.



  • General schedule(s) is an 8-hour M-F assignment, however, employee must be willing to work alternate schedules occasionally; that may include early mornings, nights, and/or weekends. Occasional overnight travel.



  • Sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods of time up to 8-hours. Manufacturing plant environment with some noise level.
  • Bending, squatting, twisting, kneeling is required on a regular basis.
  • Occasional climbing.
  • The use of power tools; push/pull and power grasping.
  • Occasional Lifting up to 25 lbs.
  • Reading computer screen or other electronic devices.
  • Use of various office hand and electrical tools or equipment.
  • Ability to function in plant with varying temperatures
