Title: Assistant Superintendent - Caustic Plant

Role Summary
The Assistant Superintendent – Caustic is a key member of the Power Department’s management team that is responsible for providing leadership, operational strategies, environmental compliance and ensuring excellent safety performance for their area. This role is responsible for oversite of the daily operations and outage scope associated with the recausticizing plant. This role reports to the Power Department Manager.
Duties & Responsibilities (include but are not limited to the following):
- Utilize and refine standard work systems to effect sustainable positive results in safety, environmental, people, housekeeping, quality, cost, and performance.
- Demonstrate safety as a core value and foster a safe work culture by promoting and enforcing behavioral based safety practices and standards
- Review environmental compliance measures daily
- Monitor and report on Key Process Indicators
- Manage caustic inventories to support mill operations
- Optimize energy metrics
- Identify areas of opportunity to improve operations
- Work with Department Learning Leader to develop training curriculum
- Collaborates with all levels of management personnel to establish production and quality control standards, develop budgets and cost controls to help ensure long term sustainability.
- Implement improvement strategies designed to: support productivity, increase yield and operating efficiency, reduce cost, and improve reliability.
- Promote team concept with supervisors and production crews to assure continuity in reaching common production goals
- Provide input on capital projects and strategic improvement plans for all other Mill areas
- Maintain asset management systems to improve equipment performance and reliability
- Manage continuous improvement projects for area of responsibility
- Coordinates predictive and preventative maintenance activities with maintenance to prioritize maintenance and outage needs and establishing long-term sustainability for equipment
- Implement and improve standard work systems such as trouble cause corrections, standard operating procedures, startup/shutdown checklists, and centerlines
- Maintain effective communications and working relationships with Operations Departments, Maintenance, Safety, IT, Environmental, Human Resources, Engineering, Purchasing and Suppliers,
- Collaborate with Department Learning Leaders to ensure training program for department personnel is current and appropriate training levels are met
- Other duties as assigned
- Initiate process improvement projects to eliminate emissions/releases
- Monitor and manage Key Process Indicators
Required Skills
Required Characteristics
- Bachelor s Degree in Electrical or Chemical Engineering or related technical field and a minimum five (5) years of experience working with power and/or recovery processes
OR
- Eight (8) years of years of experience in Kraft Recovery processes and three (3) years of supervisory experience
- Demonstrated knowledge of lime kiln and recausticizing operations
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
- Proven strong strategic planning and analytical skills
- Demonstrated troubleshooting skills of the pulping process
- Demonstrated ability to develop strategic priorities to meet short and long-term objectives
- Proficient in utilizing Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Proven ability to manage and mentor leadership staff
- Demonstrated ability to drive change leading to improved performance over time
- Strong organizational skills with the proven ability develop and implement changes necessitated by internal and external business conditions
- Solid oral and written communication skills
- Comprehensive knowledge of the operation of an integrated mill
- Proficient at managing all levels of an operating area and interfacing with all levels of an organization
- Possess an entrepreneurial and innovative spirit, with a situational (servant, directive, collaborative) leadership approach to managing the team
- Available to provide coverage on holiday, off-days, weekends and after-hours
- Must be able to pass a background check, drug screening and reference check
- Legally authorized to work in the United States
- Proven experience with reliability and continuous improvement principles and techniques
Desired Characteristics
- Experience within a unionized environment
- Working knowledge of SAP
- Knowledge Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma
- Experience and knowledge of Process Safety Management (PSM)
