Graphic Packaging International, LLC is one of the largest manufacturers of paperboard and fiber-based packaging for the world’s most recognized brands of food, beverage, and consumer products is growing their business!  We have embarked on a significant capital investment to modernize and grow our coated recycled paperboard (CRB) manufacturing portfolio. The investment includes building a state-of-the-art paper machine on a greenfield site in Waco, Texas. This investment will upgrade the company’s overall recycled paperboard capacity and take advantage of a rapidly-growing market for recycled and recyclable packaging.

 

This investment will position Graphic Packaging International, LLC as the most technologically advanced producer in its industry, benefitting their customers, their shareholders and the environment when this highly productive paperboard machine ramps up. 

 

We are seeking a Manager, Engineering II to join the Waco, Texas (Greenfield Startup) team.   

 

MISSION / SUMMARY:

Engineering Manager leads the team of engineers and is responsible for the overall engineering and project needs for the mill.  They understand and align business operations and Engineering as he/she executes their role to exceed customer expectations and align with GPI business, cultural, financial and operational objectives.

JOB FUNCTIONS: Job functions include but are not limited to the following.

  • Manage day-to-day activities for the engineering department to include:
  • Manage the facilities capital budget including local projects and capital spares
  • Utilize SAP for capital project spending tracking, purchasing functions, work order generation and new equipment BOM development
  • Assign and follow up on work with direct reports
  • Write or edit capital expenditure requests, submit them and track the approval process
  • Determine priority for various requests for engineering resources
  • Keep senior management apprised of situations affecting the mill
  • Keep department heads apprised of situations or conditions affecting their machines/departments
  • Manage consulting engineers and contractors by setting expectations for deliverables and tracking costs and project progress
  • Design processes or systems to improve mill efficiency
  • Participate in machine outage planning meetings and assist with maintenance task supervision during machine outages
  • Participate in other meetings, as required, relating to Continuous Improvement, Safety Development, Environmental Stewardship, Work Order Scheduling, Zoning or City Planning Commission meetings, Kepner-Tregoe problem solving analysis sessions, Potential Problem Analysis meetings, Month-end Scorecard meetings as well as others.
  • Manage the mill’s Fixed Asset Register with the help of the Finance Department
  • Supply information, drawings, specifications, etc. to senior management, department heads, maintenance and others, as requested.
  • Perform weekend duty functions as manager for the WWTP and Power Houses, and be the back-up Maintenance Superintendent.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

BACKGROUND / EXPERIENCE:

  • 5 years of progressive and practical paper mill operation experience preferred
  • 5 years of previous supervisory experience in a manufacturing environment required
  • 10 years of experience in key maintenance/engineering roles in a heavy manufacturing environment

 

EDUCATION / KNOWLEDGE:

  • BS Degree in Engineering or equivalent technical experience
  • 8-10 years relevant maintenance and operations management experience required
  • Experience with managing salaried and hourly in an industrial environment
  • Demonstrated leadership
  • Proactive problem solver

 

SCHEDULE DEMANDS:

  • General schedule is an 8-10 hour M-F assignment, however, employee must be willing to work alternate schedules occasionally; that may include early mornings, nights, and/or weekends and be punctual while doing so.  Schedule includes weekend rotation coverage.
  • Occasional overnight travel to include flying, driving, riding or by rail.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Sitting or standing for extended periods up to 8-hours.
  • Walking to and from operating areas.
  • Able to climb ladders
  • Wear PPE when required:  Hard Hat, safety glasses, hearing protection etc.
  • Occasional Lifting up to 20 lbs.
  • Reading computer screen or other electronic devices.
  • Use of various office hand and electrical tools or equipment.
