Role Summary

The Process Control Engineer will work as part of our Process Control team that supports the Mill’s process control programs and systems in direct support of operations. This role is responsible for implementing standard and complex process control solutions to successful completion while focusing on continuous improvement of quality and safety performance.  The position is also responsible for implementing overall control system strategy within the mill as part of a team and assist in developing, implementing, testing and maintaining innovative technical solutions.  The Process Control Engineer will interface closely with process engineering, operations, reliability, project engineering and maintenance and is responsible for executing work safely to the standards and procedures by the industry and company.

Job Accountabilities

  • Specific duties include design and implementation of process control configurations, tuning control loops, troubleshooting control opportunities and related process control engineer/specialist functions in the DCS and in safety instrumented systems.
  • Abilities to multi-tasks and communicate technical concepts and solutions effectively and at a high level.
  • Knowledge of instrumentation installation, specification sheets, calibration, calculations and configuration Champion projects, and programs that support the mills vision.
  • Ensure process safety, safety, and environmental compliance by supporting process hazard analysis, incident investigations, procedure development, management of change, alarm management, pressure protection management, and providing technical assistance for work scope development, assessment of process impacts on equipment, and environmental reviews
  • Provide process control technical assistance to process operations for solving operating problems, optimizing, and improving production planning
  • Support turnaround and unit shutdown planning and execution through participation in scope development, providing justification for work items, and providing technical support outage timeframe
  • Support capital project development, define project scopes, complete project estimates, and support design and construction
  • Review projects for technical accuracy and clarity and deliver presentations as required to support project updates, justification, and explanation
  • Other duties as assigned

 Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering or related technical field or equivalent specific process control specialist experience in a plant environment
  • Understanding of alarm management principles
  • Demonstrated technical experience with process control project execution
  • Knowledge of Honeywell, Valmet or other DCS platforms
  • Experience implementing traditional DCS projects and conversions both DCS and SIS
  • High level of understanding of and experience with process control systems including DCS, safety instrumented systems, and process control networks. PLC’s knowledge is a plus.
  • Knowledgeable of Advanced Process Control applications
  • Demonstrate practical application of engineering, and mathematical principles to papermaking or chemical processes and unit operations.
  • Ability to effectively use structured approaches in problem solving and troubleshooting.
  • Capability of producing results in both a team and individual environment.
  • Demonstrate passion and tenacity for improvement of self, others, and mill performance.
  • Exhibits a working knowledge of policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.
  • Advanced Computer skills: ability to access, navigate, learn, and use application software such as Microsoft Office, Excel, data acquisition/historian programs, alarm management, and quality control lab systems. Solid verbal and written communication and technical writing skills
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to interact effectively and positively with all levels of Company personnel
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to anticipate and adapt to dynamic situations
  • Must pass drug test and background check
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States

Required Experience

Desired Characteristics

  • Five (5) years or more years of experience in engineering or process control systems working in a paper, chemical, refining or manufacturing environment
  • Working knowledge of networking, virtualization, and MS security
  • Advanced understanding of an integrated paper mill processes
  • Demonstrated experience in development and implementation of process control strategy, automation philosophy, or advance process control applications
