The Laboratory Technician II position is a position at GPI’s Research and Development facility in West Monroe, LA.  This position reports to the designated Supervisor or Manager.  This position supports pilot operation activities and product testing for the West Monroe Research and Development group. 

 

JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist in research on projects relative to a varied group of products.
  • Assist on complex problems, operating pilot plant equipment and/or other appropriate equipment to analyze and test materials. Record, calculate and analyze data from testing.
  • Assist in planning experiments, improvements in test methods, equipment, products and processes and assist in construction of less complex apparatus for research purposes.
  • Perform and direct the performance of experimental runs involved in the preparation of samples or trial of processes.
  • Record relevant data from testing. Ensure that this data is collected in a spreadsheet. Write routine reports on results of investigations if required.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

 

CORE COMPETENCIES

  • Qualification in test procedures for area (coating and coated board tests and/or pulp and base paper tests) and calibration of appropriate equipment.  Operate all laboratory equipment to perform quantitative and qualitative analysis of products.
  • Follow standardized test procedures (Internal, ANSI, ASTM, TAPPI).
  • Record detailed documentation of results in a standardized format.
  • Assist with benchmarking efforts for internal and competitor products.
  • Qualification on pilot and/or appropriate equipment - must be able to function at least through supervised operation level on the appropriate equipment.
  • Mental comprehension - must be able to read safety procedures, operating procedures, test procedures, SDS's, etc. and understand their meaning and instruction.
  • Verbal comprehension - employee must have a thorough working knowledge of the English language to include reading, writing and speaking.
  • Computer/math skills - basic computer skills for data entry (including spreadsheet skills). Employee must be able to add, subtract, multiply, divide and work with fractions and decimals. Ability to create and decipher charts and graphs a plus.
  • A self-starter capable of working on and completing multiple tasks.
  • Strong organizational, time management, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to operate industrial equipment such as a fork truck, etc.
  • Adhere to all health, safety, and environmental regulations relative to assigned analytical work; maintain and assist others in maintaining a clean, safe work environment.
  • Facilitate, encourage, promote, and engage in teamwork activities
  • Take instruction from supervision.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

EDUCATION / KNOWLEDGE:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.  Continued education in a STEM field is a plus.

 

SKILLS:

  • Occasionally work in fast paced, high stress environment.
  • Demonstrate excellent written communication skills.
  • Detail and data oriented with precise documentation and record keeping skills.
  • Microsoft Office Suite skills required.
  • Excellent Excel skills preferred.
  • Well-organized workflow and deadline oriented.
  • Ability to work within a team environment.
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English. Clear and professional written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience in an industrial environment a plus.
  • Ability to perform intermediate/advance computer skills (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint); SAP knowledge a plus

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Sitting or standing, depending on changing job assignment, for extended periods.
  • Awkward and/or repetitive movements.
  • Ability to lift 75+ lbs to chest level to move and prepare materials for pilot experiments.
  • Ability to work safely and effectively on/around large manufacturing equipment. Communicates and works effectively and safely around sometimes dangerous chemicals and chemical environments.
  • Reading computer screen or other electronic devices.
  • Use of various office hand and electrical tools or equipment.
  • Physical demands commonly associated* with the performance of the functions of this job:
    • Sitting, standing, bending, lifting, climbing
  • Working in wet and dirty environments.
  • Work in areas of fluctuating temperature.
  • Working conditions may include: Extremes of heat (seasonal), humidity (seasonal), noise (from production machinery).

SCHEDULE DEMANDS:

Salary Min:   $45,410.00

Salary Mid:   $56,810.00

Salary Max:  $68,210.00
